Shanghai People’s Square is centrally located in Shanghai, marking the division between East Nanjing Road and West Nanjing Road. It is a vibrant area for exploration.
Before 1949, the site of Shanghai People’s Square and the People’s Park was a renowned horse racetrack, established in 1861 and celebrated as the ‘No.1 Racetrack in the Far East’. Visitors can still see the remnants of the former main building in the northeast part of People’s Square.
The tour will include many scenic spots around People’s Square, such as the new Municipal Government Mansion, Shanghai Museum, Shanghai Grand Theater, Shanghai History Museum, and Mu’en Church. -
Shanghai Grand Theater - The group will admire the facade of the Shanghai Grand Theater.
The Shanghai Grand Theater boasts a unique design and elegant shape, blending Western and Chinese architectural styles seamlessly. The white arched vault complements the glass curtain walls, resembling a crystal palace. -
Mu’en Church - Mu’en Church is situated on Xizang Zhong Lu, amidst department stores directly across from People’s Square. Originally named Moore Church in honor of the generous American donor Moore, the church is a neo-Gothic structure designed by European architect Laszlo Hudec. It features a brick-and-wood construction with a spacious lobby, and the central part forms the main body of the church. The hall’s rectangular pillars, balcony balusters, and bema are adorned with artificial stones. Inside, the concrete ribbed vault is visible.
Next, the group will visit the Shanghai History Museum to explore 6000 years of Shanghai’s civilization. -
Shanghai History Museum - Located in the People’s Square area, the Shanghai History Museum is a large museum dedicated to the local history of Shanghai. It houses over a thousand relics and chronicles 6000 years of history from the region. For those curious about Old Shanghai, the museum provides answers. Divided into two sections – Ancient Shanghai and Modern Shanghai, it traces the city’s political, social, economic, and cultural evolution from 4000 BC to the founding of the People’s Republic of China in 1949.
Afterward, the group will enjoy themselves at Shanghai Great World Amusement Park. - Shanghai Great World Amusement Park - Once the pinnacle of nightlife in Shanghai, Da Shi Jie was the place to be in the foreign settlement area. Crowds gathered to see novelties and enjoy themselves. The first floor still features the “magic mirrors” imported from the Netherlands decades ago. Some shows continue to thrive, showcasing beautifully woven carpets from Xinjiang, cave paintings from Ningxia, and a variety of skilled artisans displaying their crafts.
The group will then stroll along Nanjing Road, exploring nearby communities and the thinnest building.
- Nanjing Lu (Nanjing Road) - Nanjing Road is renowned as the ‘No. 1 commercial street in China’, a longstanding city landmark. Spanning 5.5 kilometers, it hosts over 600 shops, attracting approximately 1.7 million visitors daily. Here, one can find everything from unique and affordable souvenirs to luxurious world-famous brands. Visitors can also explore the surrounding neighborhoods and the thinnest building.
The thinnest building on Ningbo Road is known as the Paper Building (纸片楼). It was once featured in the British Daily Mail as possibly the world’s flattest and thinnest building. Viewed diagonally from the front, it resembles a piece of paper. The old house has four floors and is not entirely thin; it forms a triangular polygon. This unique and intriguing building still houses many residents.
The group will then transfer to Yuyuan Old Street to enjoy a local specialty for lunch.
-
Yuyuan Old Street - Historically known as Miaoqian Dajie, Shanghai Old Street is a historic business street combining tourist attractions, shops, entertainment, and cultural exhibits. Its special social attractions and rich commercial background stem from being home to the city’s earliest bank, gold shop, jeweler’s store, wine shop, and tea house. Exploring the old alleys of Shanghai offers a glimpse into the city’s traditional culture and the real life of the Shanghainese.
The group can walk to the Zigzag Nine Bend Bridge. In Chinese culture, the number nine symbolizes auspiciousness, and crossing the Bridge is believed to bring good luck. The Bridge leads to Mid-Lake Pavilion Teahouse, the oldest teahouse in Shanghai.
Next, the group will take a cruise to enjoy the scenery along the Huangpu River.
- Huangpu River - The Huangpu River separates two iconic yet distinct Shanghai sights: the modern skyscrapers of Pudong and 26 diverse buildings of various architectural styles on the west side. The group will embark on a one-hour cruise along the Huangpu River to admire the beautiful scenery on both sides, including the Bund, the Oriental Pearl Tower, Shanghai Tower, Shanghai World Financial Center, and Jin Mao Tower.
The group will then explore the local Bird and Flower Market to experience the authentic Shanghai lifestyle.
- Burdaard - The tour begins at the intersection of Tibet Road and Fangbang Road, in one of Shanghai’s many antique neighborhoods, also known as the cricket market. It is filled with flowers, bonsai, birds, fish, insects, and crowds of people searching for whatever their hearts desire. It is an excellent place to experience a slice of local life.
Later, the group will transfer to Pudong to explore Shanghai’s financial district and stroll along the Riverside Promenade.
-
Pudong New Area - As a vibrant and bustling district, Pudong offers visitors some of the most modern attractions, businesses, skyscrapers, and shopping malls, all showcasing the latest in entertainment, technology, and fashion.
The group will walk along Lujiazui Ring Bridge, an ideal spot for photographing skyscrapers. - Riverside Promenade (Bingjiang Da Dao) - The guide will then lead the group around Shanghai Binjiang Avenue, built in 1997 and located on the east bank of the Huangpu River. It is praised as the new Bund of Pudong, integrating sightseeing, leisure, and relaxation, with a focus on the urban ecological environment and functions. Walking along the broad Binjiang Avenue, overlooking the panorama of the Bund, and listening to the melodious whistle on the Huangpu River offers a rare, peaceful, and comfortable experience in the heart of the metropolis.
Finally, the group will enjoy a comfortable transfer back to the hotel, wrapping up their memories and bidding farewell at the hotel.
