- The Bund - The tour guide will meet the group at the hotel at 9:00 a.m. From there, the group will travel to the Bund using public transportation. The Bund is a renowned waterfront on the west bank of the Huangpu River and is considered a symbol of Shanghai. It showcases the city’s vibrant blend of historical charm and modern development, making it a must-visit destination. Visitors will admire 26 buildings of various architectural styles, including the Peace Hotel, Shanghai Customs House, and Shanghai Pudong Development Bank, as well as the impressive skyline across the Huangpu River.
- Waibaidu Bridge - Known as a romantic spot for couples, Waibaidu Bridge is a popular filming location for TV series and movies, attracting those with a nostalgic love for old Shanghai. This landmark of the old city spans the Suzhou Creek at its junction with the Huangpu River. It is the city’s oldest and largest steel bridge, running from north to south.
- Nanjing Lu (Nanjing Road) - Nanjing Road is famed as China’s premier commercial street and has long been a city landmark. Stretching 5.5 kilometers, it features over 600 shops, drawing approximately 1.7 million visitors daily. Shoppers can find everything from affordable souvenirs to luxury global brands. Nearby, the thinnest building on Ningbo Road, known as the Paper Building (纸片楼), was once highlighted by the British Daily Mail as possibly the world’s flattest and thinnest building. From a 30° angle, it appears paper-thin, though it is a four-story triangular polygon with many residents.
- People’s Square (Renmin Guang Chang) - Located at the heart of Shanghai, People’s Square marks the division between East and West Nanjing Road. It is a bustling area for exploration. Before 1949, it was a famous horse racetrack, built in 1861 and known as the ‘No.1 Racetrack in the Far East’. Visitors can still see remnants of the main building in the northeast part of the square. Nearby attractions include the new Municipal Government Mansion, Shanghai Museum, Shanghai Grand Theater, Shanghai History Museum, and the Urban Planning Exhibition Hall.
The group will then walk to Yunnan Road, a street lined with delightful eateries, perfect for a quick meal. There will be free time to explore and have lunch (at personal expense), with the guide recommending some tasty local dishes. In the afternoon, the group will stroll around Yuayuan Old Street, soaking in the authentic Shanghai atmosphere and visiting a classical garden.
- Yuyuan Old Street - Also known as Miaoqian Dajie, Shanghai Old Street is a historic business street featuring tourist attractions, shops, entertainment, and cultural exhibits. Its rich commercial history includes the city’s first bank, gold shop, jeweler’s store, wine shop, and tea house. Exploring the old alleys offers a glimpse into traditional Shanghai culture and local life.
The group will then visit a classical garden.
- Yu Garden (Yuyuan) - The tour continues to Yu Garden, originally built in 1559 during the Ming Dynasty by Pan Yunduan as a retreat for his father, Minister Pan En. Construction was delayed until 1577 due to Pan Yunduan’s appointment as governor of Sichuan. Despite its small size, Yu Garden features all the elements of a classical Chinese garden, including pavilions, halls, rockeries, ponds, and cloisters, each with distinct characteristics. The garden is divided into six areas, each with its own unique style.
- Oriental Pearl Tower (Dongfang Mingzhu) - Once the tallest building in Shanghai, the Oriental Pearl Tower remains a prominent feature of the Pudong skyline, visible from The Bund. The futuristic 1,535-foot (468-meter) tower includes observation platforms, a glass-bottomed walkway, a rotating restaurant, and the Shanghai History Museum in its basement. The tower’s facade is a must-see during a Shanghai visit. The group will enter the Oriental Pearl Tower, explore Shanghai’s history in the Municipal History Museum located in the tower’s base, take an elevator to the glass-bottomed sightseeing floor, and enjoy the views from the observation decks.
Afterwards, the group will return to the hotel using public transportation, concluding the tour with fond memories.
