Heping Fandian - Also known as the Peace Hotel, Heping Fandian consists of the South Building and North Building.
South Building
This structure features a brick veneer and rises six stories to a height of 30 meters. Its exterior is designed in a Renaissance style, with a focus on color and a locally interpreted Victorian Renaissance design.
North Building
Originally the Sassoon House, built in 1929, this building stands 77 meters tall. It prominently features straight lines on its exterior, with decorative patterns on pediments and eaves. Most of the building is faced with granite, while the ninth floor and roof are finished with terracotta. The eastern façade, facing the Huangpu River and the Bund, boasts a pyramidal roof with steep sides, reaching about 10 meters in height.
Next, the group will proceed to People’s Square to visit the Shanghai Museum and delve into the rich history and culture of Shanghai.
- People’s Square (Renmin Guang Chang) - Situated at the heart of Shanghai, People’s Square marks the division between East Nanjing Road and West Nanjing Road. It is a bustling area for exploration. Before 1949, the site of People’s Square and People’s Park was a renowned horse racetrack, established in 1861 and known as the ‘No.1 Racetrack in the Far East’. Visitors can still see the remnants of the former main building in the northeast part of People’s Square. The group will explore many scenic spots around People’s Square, including the new Municipal Government Mansion, Shanghai Museum, Shanghai Grand Theater, Shanghai History Museum, and the Urban Planning Exhibition Hall.
- Shanghai Grand Theater - The group will admire the facade of the Shanghai Grand Theater. This theater is uniquely designed, blending Western and Chinese architectural styles. Its white arched vault complements the glass curtain walls, resembling a crystal palace.
- Shanghai Museum (Shanghai Bowuguan) - Located in the center of Shanghai at People’s Square, the Shanghai Museum is a large museum dedicated to ancient Chinese art. Its design and presentation immerse visitors in artifacts that reflect ancient wisdom and philosophy. The exterior features a round dome and square base, symbolizing the ancient concept of a round heaven and square earth. The museum is divided into eleven galleries and three exhibition halls, covering major categories of Chinese art: Ancient Bronze, Ancient Ceramics, Paintings, Calligraphy, Ancient Sculpture, Ancient Jade, Coins, Ming and Qing Furniture, Seals, and Minority Nationalities.
- Nanjing Lu (Nanjing Road) - Nanjing Road is renowned as the ‘No. 1 commercial street in China’ and has long been a city landmark. Spanning 5.5 kilometers, it hosts over 600 shops, attracting approximately 1.7 million visitors daily. Shoppers can find everything from affordable souvenirs to luxurious global brands. The surrounding neighborhoods and the thinnest building can also be explored.
The thinnest building on Ningbo Road is known as the Paper Building (纸片楼). It was once featured in the British Daily Mail as possibly the world’s flattest and thinnest building. Viewed diagonally from the front, it resembles a piece of paper. The old house has four floors and is not entirely thin; it is shaped like a triangular polygon. This unique building still houses many residents.
- Former French Concession - Famous for its tree-lined boulevards, the former French Concession is a stylish neighborhood with a delightful mix of Chinese and European architecture. Visitors can stroll along quiet alleyways, enjoy the botanical beauty of a French-style park, and admire the intricate facades of early 20th-century villas and apartments, discovering the notable figures who once lived there.
- Fuxing Park - Also known as Gujiazhai Park, Fuxing Park is a distinctive park in Shanghai that retains the French classic style, characterized by its plaids and patterns. It remains popular for morning exercises among seniors. Visitors will experience the vibrant life of retirees.
-
Sinan Mansions - A Delightful Leisure and Entertainment Destination
Sinan Road is a well-known French-style street in the Former French Concession of Shanghai. It features around twenty garden houses on both sides, representing nearly all residential styles of early 20th-century Shanghai. The area includes boutique hotels, apartment hotels, and enterprise mansions, as well as a variety of restaurants, bars, coffee houses, tea houses, clubs, convention centers, showrooms, cultural salons, designer shops, and recreational parks. Visitors can stroll along this clean and romantic one-way street, enjoying the shade of plane trees on both sides, and find tranquility amidst bustling Shanghai. - Xintiandi - Xintiandi is a tourist attraction that preserves Shanghai’s historical and cultural features while blending Chinese and Western cultures. It is divided into northern and southern sections. The south is characterized by modern architecture, while the north features Shikumen old buildings. This combination of Shikumen and modern architectural styles has transformed Xintiandi into a trendy pedestrian street in the city center, embodying the popular and leisurely lifestyle of the city’s new generation. Outdoor cafes, bars, and romantic restaurants are abundant.
- Shikumen Museum, Shanghai - This museum is housed in an old Shikumen building from the 1920s that has been preserved and renovated. It is modeled after a typical household from the 1920s, with seven main exhibition rooms: the guest room, study room, old people’s room, master room, daughter room, pavilion room, and oven room. The story of a Shikumen family unfolds throughout the visit, showcasing the unique Shikumen architectural culture of Shanghai and recreating the living space and lifestyle of Shanghai residents from that era.
