During the Vietnam War, it was strategically positioned on the border between North and South Vietnam. The tunnels were constructed to protect residents from the heavy bombing of the Son Trung and Son Ha communes in Vinh Linh County, Quang Tri Province, within the Vietnamese Demilitarized Zone. Construction began in 1966 and the tunnels were utilized until early 1972.
