Brú Base/ Reykjavík – Landmannalaugar – Álftavatn

Southcoast Adventure - The day begins early at Brú Base, heading directly to Landmannalaugar to embark on a hike upon arrival. The journey through the geothermal landscape leads to Álftavatn, passing through Hrafntinnusker, known for its obsidian desert. The path continues towards the overnight destination at Álftavatn Lake, with views of Mt. Reykjafjöll and the scenic Jökultungur (glacier tongue) area.

This day is long and challenging but offers an exhilarating highland adventure.

Brú Base – Landmannalaugar: Driving time 2-3 hours

Landmannalaugar – Álftavatn:

Distance: 24km (15mi).
Walking time: 7-9 hours.
Ascent: 470m (1540´).
Descent: 490m (1610´)

Álftavatn - Emstur

Laugavegur - After a satisfying breakfast and a restful night, the journey continues on the Laugavegur trail towards Emstur. This section is easier than the previous day, traversing black sand deserts with striking contrast mountains like Stórasúla and Hattfell.

The path leads to the hut in Emstrur (Botnar), where the glaciers Eyjafjallajökull and Mýrdalsjökull are visible.

After dinner, there is an optional evening hike to the stunning 200-meter canyon, Markarfljótsgljúfur. This is an evening hike not to be missed!

Álftavatn – Emstur:

Distance: 15km (9.5 mi).
Walking time: 5-6 hrs.
Descent: 40 m (130′).

Emstrur – Þórsmörk – Seljalandsfoss / Brú Basecamp / Reykjavík

Thorsmork - Departing from Emstur, the journey continues to Þórsmörk, walking alongside the Mýrdalsjökull glacier. As the descent to Almenningar begins, the landscape transforms with the appearance of trees. With the Laugavegur trail completed, Þórsmörk is reached, offering a beautiful oasis hidden behind the Eyjafjallajökull glacier.

From Þórsmörk, the route leads back to Brú Base, with a final stop at the magnificent Seljalandsfoss waterfall! The return to Brú Base is expected in the afternoon.

Walking time: 6-7 hrs.
Descent: 300 m (985′).

Þórsmörk – Brú Basecamp:
Driving time: 1 – 1.5 hours.
