What Makes the Northern Lights?

The Northern Lights, or Aurora Borealis, are formed by the interaction of oxygen and nitrogen atoms in the Earth’s atmosphere with electrons emitted by the sun during geomagnetic storms. This phenomenon is notoriously challenging to predict, even with advanced meteorological technology. In Icelandic folklore, their appearance was linked to the Valkyries’ ride, while the Greeks and Romans believed it was the sister of Helios, the Sun God, riding a multi-colored chariot across the sky. Expectant Icelandic mothers avoided gazing at their beauty, fearing it would cause their babies to be born cross-eyed due to their profound allure.
