- Gunung Padang Megalithic Site - Situated in Karyamukti, West Java, Indonesia, Gunung Padang is an archaeological marvel located 50 kilometers (31 miles) southwest of Cianjur. Perched at an elevation of 885 meters (2,904 feet) above sea level, this site encompasses a hill—an extinct volcano—featuring five terraces bordered by stone retaining walls. These terraces are accessible via 370 consecutive andesite steps, ascending approximately 95 meters (312 feet). The site is adorned with large hexagonal stone columns of volcanic origin. The Sundanese people hold the site in high regard, considering it sacred and attributing its creation to King Siliwangi’s legendary attempt to construct a palace in a single night. The terraces are man-made platforms, achieved by leveling high areas and filling low areas to create a flat surface. The terrace boundaries are formed by retaining walls made of volcanic polygonal columns, stacked horizontally and erected vertically as posts. Access to the terrace complex is provided by a central stairway with 370 steps, featuring a 45-degree incline and extending 110 meters (360 feet) in length.
