Journey to the Heart of the Sahara

The journey began in the charming town of Ifran, often referred to as Morocco’s Switzerland. Nestled at an altitude of 1600 meters, the crisp air was a refreshing change from the heat of the lower regions. As we made our way through the town, I couldn’t help but admire the unique blend of Moroccan and Swiss architecture. The cedar forests surrounding the area were home to playful monkeys, a sight that brought back memories of my wildlife photography expeditions. Though I stayed in the car, watching the monkeys from afar, it was a reminder of the delicate balance between tourism and wildlife conservation.

Our next stop was the Ziz Valley, a breathtaking oasis of palm trees set against the backdrop of majestic cliffs. The landscape was unlike anything I had seen before, a testament to the diverse beauty of Morocco. As we continued our journey towards Merzouga, the anticipation of the desert adventure ahead was palpable. The thought of traversing the golden dunes atop a camel, witnessing the sunset and sunrise over the Sahara, filled me with excitement.

Arriving in Merzouga, we were greeted by the sight of camels waiting to take us into the heart of the desert. The journey back to Marrakech was a testament to the resilience and skill of our driver, who navigated the challenging terrain of the Atlas Mountains with ease. The heat was intense, but the breathtaking views made it all worthwhile. A stop at the World Heritage Site of Ait Benhaddou offered a glimpse into Morocco’s rich history and culture. The intricate Berber carpets and desert paintings were a testament to the artistry and craftsmanship of the local people.
