- Shrine of Our Lady of Siluva - This private day tour offers the opportunity to explore fascinating sites visited by Pope John Paul II. He was the first Roman pontiff to visit Lithuania in September 1993. His pontificate is associated with the Lithuanian religious and national revival, as well as the re-establishment of the Lithuanian Republic in 1990. Early in his pontificate, John Paul II famously declared, “Half of my heart is in Lithuania.”
The tour includes two sites visited by the Pope: the Siluva Shrine of Our Lady and the Hill of Crosses, along with an additional site featuring the beautiful monastery of Tytuvenai.
The tour begins in Vilnius and proceeds to Siluva. Since the early 16th century, Siluva has been renowned for the indulgenced Feast of the Nativity of the Blessed Virgin Mary. It is also known for the first widely recognized apparition of the Mother of God in Europe. Today, Siluva is one of Lithuania’s most significant pilgrimage sites, maintaining its ancient tradition of the indulgenced Feast of the Nativity of the Blessed Virgin Mary.
-
Church of Our Lady of the Angels - The next stop is the Tytuvenai monastery. Tytuvėnai’s Church of Our Lady of the Angels and the Bernardine monastery complex are among Lithuania’s largest and most important examples of 17th and 18th-century sacred architecture, showcasing a harmonious blend of Gothic, Mannerist, and Baroque styles. The ensemble includes a church, a courtyard with the Holy Steps Chapel, and the stone wall of a two-story monastery. The main altar of the church features a renowned painting of the Mother of God and Child.
-
Kryziu Kalnas - The Hill of Crosses contains approximately 100,000 crosses. This historical architectural monument is a unique composition of folk art, attracting visitors with its tranquility, spirituality, authenticity, and sacred nature. The Hill of Crosses in Lithuania made a profound impression on Pope John Paul II. Additionally, a monastery was built near the hill at the Pope’s initiative.
After the visit, the tour will return to Vilnius.
