Fabulous bird watching at Kalapathar - This was fabulous. Bhaskar was my guide and we saw 20+ birds and some other animals and also plants and seeds. We walked on a beach, through a village and a forest, so three ecosystems in one trip. I highly recommend this to everyone. It's not difficult. Bring closed toed shoes or request them from guide.

Fabulous birdwatching at Kalapathar on Havelock Island - What an awesome experience this birdwatching trip turned out to be. It had rained the whole previous day and my snorkeling and mangrove kayaking trips had been cancelled. I checked this activity with trepidation lest it be cancelled also, but Bhaskar agreed to meet me at Kalapathar just after sunrise when the birds would be most active. He brought a pair of binoculars and aquashoes for me to wear. The next two hours went by in a whirl of birds, color and information. Bhaskar is an excellent bird spotter - the list he sent me of the birds we had seen include 20 birds, among which we counted the somewhat rare Andaman coucal. We saw the beautiful collared kingfisher and an Asian emerald dove, butcher birds and pairs of bulbuls, swarms of munia flitting hither and yon, and to cap it all, overhead flew a massive white-bellied sea eagle. Of these birds, I perhaps spotted 2; the rest were all Bhaskar. Another thing, Bhaskar was just as thrilled as I was to see these birds, even though he's probably seen hundreds. His enthusiasm was terrific and it really made the walk fun. Then we entered the forest and Bhaskar pointed out trees and seeds (like the suicide seed) and the winged seeds of gurjan. We saw hermit crabs and Bhaskar told me of how they form a conga line in order of size when they are ready to change shells; of the markings used to find direction within the forest; how kingfishers wait patiently above land crab holes for the crabs to emerge - we saw the evidence of such feasts along the path. Bhaskar shared with me his sympathetic take on locals' lives when I got quite upset at the number of dead frogs (and a snake) on the road, crushed by careless drivers' wheels and of the challenges of farming where the weather does not stay put. I honestly learned a lot (and I am a biology teacher!) Check out the Instagram pages of the Habitat Institute Andamans and the Activity Center Manager Anurag Karekar. Unfortunately my bandwidth is limited on the island and I couldn't pull them up to link. So if you are on Havelock Island, be sure to plan a Kalapathar Sunrise Birdwatching and Village Tour with Bhaskar.

Good way to experience rural andamans - Bhaskar was well informed about bird species, plants, the community, and the island. More information about the beach could be added but there is already a lot to cover!

Amazing sunrise and birdwatching experience with experts - Started with a beautiful sunrise over the beach, then saw about 30 new species of birds in this excellent early morning tour. Anurag and Bhaskar were experts at locating and identifying the birds, some of the most beautiful and interesting I’ve ever seen.
