With temperatures ranging from 0 to 10 °C, a warm local snack accompanied by hot coffee or tea will be ready for you.
As the sun begins to rise, you can select your preferred spot. It’s just a 100-meter walk from your early morning drink to the viewpoint. The weather and volcanic activity will influence your morning views, but the sight of the sun rising over this lunar-like landscape is always breathtaking.
- Sand Sea - After sunrise, around 6:00 AM, the volcanic black Sand Sea awaits. This Sea of Sand partially encircles Mount Bromo and is a greyish-black hue. Numerous small rivers traverse this Sand Sea. You can enjoy breakfast amidst this stunning landscape before proceeding to the parking area near Poten Luhur Temple.
- Luhur Poten Temple - Luhur Poten Temple is a Hindu temple situated within the Sea of Sand surrounding Mount Bromo. The temple remains active, and during ceremonies, you are welcome to observe. Otherwise, the temple is closed, but it remains a remarkable sight in the Sea of Sand.
The Jeep will park near this temple, marking the start of your hike to the crater rim of the active Bromo volcano.
- Mount Bromo - It is then a 45-minute walk to the summit of Mount Bromo.
If walking isn’t appealing, you can rent a horse.
Remember to pause occasionally and look back, as the views are constantly changing.
Mount Bromo is an active volcano within an ancient caldera spanning 10 km. The greyish Sea of Sand and the savanna—lush green during the rainy season—surround Bromo.
- Tengger Caldera - Once back at the vehicle, you will continue to the savanna just behind Mount Bromo, known as the Tengger Caldera. Legend has it that the savanna was once a large crater lake. It dried up, forming a variety of rocky and sandy textures. The savanna is now a vast flatland with bushes and some hills, including the Teletubbies hills. Depending on the season, the savanna is either a vibrant green or a golden field.
- Coban Pelangi Waterfall - On the return journey to Malang, you can visit Pelangi Waterfall. After the savanna, it’s a short drive to the waterfall’s parking area, followed by a 30-minute downhill hike.
“Pelangi” means rainbow, and when the sun shines, a rainbow can be seen over the waterfall.
- Candi Jago - Jago Temple is small and was constructed between 1275 and 1300. It is believed to be the burial site of King Wisnuwardhana, the fourth king of the Singosari kingdom.
The journey from Pelangi Waterfall to Jago Temple takes about 30 minutes.
Your return time to Malang depends on how long you spend at each site on the way back. There is no fixed schedule, so the time spent at each location is up to you. On average, travelers return to Malang around noon.
