Jungle boogie - I felt warm and welcomed the moment I was picked up from my bus stop and brought to the hacienda on a motorbike! We had so much fun with Yoga and Azri on our 2 day trek. To top it all off we saw wild orangutans, gibbons and a monitor lizard.

Unbelievable Experience 2D1N trek - My girlfriend and I did the 2 day 1 night trek. It was an amazing experience and we were lucky enough to see 4 orangutans, including a huge lone male; long-tailed macaques, pig-tailed macaques and Thomas’s leaf monkeys. The trek was not crazy difficult but has some sections of steep incline and decline, you earn your right to see the wildlife! The food provided was delicious and came in large portions. The trek ended with tubing down the river back to Bukit Lawang. Our guide for the trek, Erwin, was not only extremely knowledgeable, taking the time to stop and teach us about the flora and fauna in Sumatra and answer our questions, but he was also hilarious and the spirit of our group, we’d like to say a huge thank you to him for making our experience unforgettable. Plus, he came and collected us from our homestay elsewhere in town, dropped us back after the trek, and offered to help us organise our transport to the airport the following day. I can’t fault the guy. Sumatra Orangutan Treks will safe-keep your luggage at their centre during the trek if you aren’t already staying in their accommodation. This was very helpful. We didn’t know they offered accommodation as well as treks, (probably could be made more obvious on the booking site). Erwin told us afterward that there are now some companies running tours which aren’t owned by locals, however use similar company names to blend in. These companies are taking the economy brought to the town by tourism and the locals are the ones who suffer, so do your research on a company you book with them, if it’s not this one.

You won’t regret staying and trekking with this locally owned business - My friend and I stayed and trekked with Orangutan Villa and Sumatra Orangutan Treks. We had a fantastic experience. The entire team is so kind and friendly. We felt like family. Our guide, Ahmed, had over 20 years of experience and all the other guides along the trails looked to him for advice on finding orangutans and other species. Our assistant guide, Agam, was funny and helpful. Everyone spoke great English. The food at the hotel and while trekking was great and even my friend (who is a very picky eater) was happy (thank you Linda!). This is also one of the few locally owned businesses in the area so if you want to support the local community, you should stay here!

Great trip, once in a lifetime! - Yoga and bambang were the best! Great guides and great trip. Well arranged and very good food. With only a two day trip we were able to see many orangutan (8) and even the more rare white and black gibbons! We also encountered families of long-tailed macaques, pig-tailed macaques, and Thomas’s leaf monkeys. With the Sumatran peacock-pheasant, an otter, and a monitor lizard added to the list, the trip couldn’t have been more complete! Thank you!

The best experience of my life - I had an amazing experience!! Far from the great Guesthouse house in the center, Sumatra Orang Outan Trek is a great place, very family friendly. The rooms are to fall on the floor, the restaurant food is excellent. Everyone here welcomes you with open arms and will make your every desire achievable. I booked the day before for the next day, and a private driver picked me up directly from my hotel in Medan for Bukit Lawang. Godex was a wonderful encounter, and even though he didn’t speak English, we spent the ride laughing. He taught me my first words in Indonesian and for the rest, Google translation did the trick. I did the 2d and one night trek with Amed and Aga as guide. They sounded at little care with us and we were lucky enough to see many Orang Outans, male and female. After the trek I was originally supposed to leave but I felt so good here that I decided to extend my stay. I finally stayed five nights. Good to know, every Saturday there is an evening in the center of Bukit Lawang. Once again everyone was super welcoming, and really interested in you. I also enjoyed a massage after the trek, the full one hour massage was welcome after the trek! My time here will be forever etched in my memory.

Amazing to see orangutans. But it seams you do not need multiday trip for that. - It was amazing to see orangutans in their natural habitat. Our guide did everything he could to make us feel comfortable and to give us an unforgettable experience. However, the time at the camp was not a success for us. It is extremely basic: you sleep on the ground on a very poor mattress and eat while sitting on the ground. Washing is done in the river. It felt more like a survival experience. Make sure to bring water shoes or at least very sturdy flip-flops, as you will cross the river many times to get to the camp. Also extra clothes so you can change. If we had known that it was possible to do a one-day trip into the jungle just to see the orangutans, we would have skipped the camping part. We visited Bukit Lawang during the rainy season, and we already found the jungle quite busy with tourists. We were told that during the dry season it can get even more crowded. What was very positive to see is that the area was clean, and we did not see any garbage along the way in the jungle.
