• Bealach na Ba Road - This road is akin to an Alpine pass in the UK, featuring sharp hairpin turns that zigzag up the mountain, with gradients nearing 17%. It is one of the highest roads in the country, reaching 626m (2,054ft) above sea level. The name is derived from the Scottish Gaelic, Bealach nam Bò, meaning ‘pass of the cattle’. Constructed in 1822, the original road was rough gravel and challenging to clear in winter, often blocked for weeks. It was fully paved in 1950.

Embarking on our journey from Inverness, we traverse the Kessock Bridge and drive westwards through Achnasheen, leading us to Lochcarron. While in Lochcarron, we can explore the Lochcarron Weavers Heritage Shop before resuming our journey northwards to Kishorn and the Bealach na Ba. Known as one of the world’s most picturesque drives, this dramatic mountain pass elevates us from sea level to heights surpassing 2,000 feet, before a return descent to the Applecross shoreline. At the charming Applecross Inn, we can savour delectable local seafood for lunch. The awe-inspiring scenery continues as we follow the coastal route to Shieldaig, offering unparalleled views of Skye, the Isles of Rona & Raasay, and even distant Harris. If we haven’t had lunch at Applecross, we can pause for a quick meal in Shieldaig, and then proceed through the imposing Torridon mountains to Kinlochewe. The return journey to Inverness leads us through Glen Docherty, giving us a chance to appreciate our favoured vista of Loch Maree.
