- Death Valley National Park - Known for being the hottest, driest, and lowest national park in the country, Death Valley is also the largest in the contiguous United States. This park offers a truly remarkable drive, providing a captivating and sometimes surreal experience. Its unique combination of expansive landscapes, extreme temperatures, and stunning geological features makes it an unforgettable adventure.
With audio guides offering commentary based on GPS location, visitors can tailor their itinerary along the tour route to suit their interests and schedule.
- Artists Palette - This scenic detour along Artist’s Drive, off Badwater Road, offers a thrilling experience with its narrow, one-way road that winds between mounds of multicolored rock. The vibrant colors range from coppery green to terra-cotta yellow, brick red, and even pink, all resulting from various mineral deposits. The Artist’s Palette is the most concentrated area along the drive, perfect for capturing stunning photographs.
- Badwater - This is the chance to stand at the lowest point in North America, 282 feet below sea level. The area features a large salt flat and a small natural pool of undrinkable water beside the road. Occasionally, after rare rain events, the basin may have more standing water, but it quickly evaporates, leaving behind dry, patterned salt flats.
- Dante’s View - Upon entering the national park from Death Valley Junction, visitors can take a magnificent 13-mile side trip to Dante’s View, located at an elevation of just over 5,000 feet. The views are breathtaking, offering a chance to appreciate the region’s changing elevations. From Dante’s, one can look down to Badwater Basin, the lowest point in the USA, and gaze at the Panamint Mountain, which peaks at over 11,000 feet. On a clear day, Mount Whitney, the highest point in the Lower 48, can be seen at 14,505 feet. This viewpoint offers incredible value!
- Devil’s Golf Course - Another of Death Valley’s stunning landscapes, Devil’s Golf Course is a vast area of giant salt crystals that expand and contract with temperature changes. Listen closely, and you might hear the crystals popping.
- Father Crowley Vista Point - This overlook offers perhaps the best view across Death Valley on the park’s western side. It’s a must-see whether arriving or departing. In addition to a superb panorama of Death Valley, visitors can glimpse Rainbow Canyon to the north, with its striking red oxidized volcanic rock fields. Father Crowley was a Catholic priest from Ireland, known as the Padre of the Desert, who served the surrounding Inyo County communities in the early 20th century.
- Mesquite Flat Sand Dunes - Nothing embodies the desert like sand dunes that support no vegetation and change shape with the wind. Naturally, Death Valley features sand dunes! The Mesquite Flat Sand Dunes offer a fantastic landscape to explore. Be cautious about venturing too far without sufficient water on a hot day, as the sand can become scorching hot.
- Ubehebe Crater - Ubehebe Crater is a significant side trip off the main road, located in the park’s remote northern corner. Expect to drive for an hour or more on an unpaved road to reach it. While guidance is provided, commentary may not be available all the way. Ubehebe is the largest of a dozen craters formed by explosive interactions between groundwater and hot magma. Further driving requires determination and a suitable 4x4 vehicle to reach Racetrack Playa, a salt flat known for moving 600-pound boulders across its surface. Also in this area is Scotty’s Castle, a remote ranch. Check current pre-booking requirements and road conditions before visiting.
- Zabriskie Point - Undoubtedly one of the most famous views in Death Valley, Zabriskie Point offers an easy vantage point over stunning badlands and should not be missed. The colors and contours change playfully with the sun at different times of day. Those looking to stay active will find excellent hiking options, including a 3.5-mile trek to Golden Canyon.
