• Hofuostooin - Chromo Sapiens / Cafe - Experience the expansive, multi-sensory, and immersive installation Chromo Sapiens by Icelandic artist Hrafnhildur Arnardóttir, also known as Shoplifter. This installation features three caves crafted from Shoplifter’s signature material, synthetic hair extensions. Each cave envelops visitors with soundscapes from the Icelandic band HAM. As you enter as homo sapiens, you are invited to explore your inner landscape through sensory stimulation, becoming the destination of your journey, and upon exiting, you emerge as Chromo Sapiens.

Höfuðstöðin, the permanent home of the installation, also offers a gift shop and a café & bar with outdoor seating.

The installation “Chromo Sapiens” is a hair landscape crafted from synthetic hair extensions, a signature medium of the artist Shoplifter. Visitors journey through three caves, beginning with “Primal Opus,” where earthy tones of black and brown adorn the walls, accented by vibrant neon hair that brings the space to life. The second and largest chamber, “Astral Gloria,” features a dazzling array of brightly colored hair suspended from dizzying heights, dramatically highlighted by lighting. Various sound recordings emanate from hidden speakers, creating an immersive soundscape that complements the visual experience. The final chamber, “Opium Natura,” presents a celestial cloud cave with shades of white and pastels. Guests are invited to touch and linger within the installation, relishing the colors and sounds, which offer a form of color therapy and open-eyed meditation.
