Lamar Valley - During our wildlife tour, we dedicate a significant portion of the time to observing the “Serengeti of Yellowstone” for grizzly and black bears, wolves, coyotes, eagles, badgers, bison, elk, pronghorn, moose, and various other wildlife. Spotting scopes and binoculars are provided to enhance viewing, and our knowledgeable adventure guide will assist in identifying Yellowstone’s diverse flora and fauna.
Lower Loop Geothermal Adventure with Lunch
Yellowstone National Park - Celebrating 150 years as America’s first National Park!
Firehole Canyon Drive - This 2-mile, one-way road off the Grand Loop south of Madison features a waterfall overlook and a swimming area.
Lower Geyser Basin - The Fountain Paint Pot Trail showcases a variety of hydrothermal features, evidence of Yellowstone’s active volcanic system. These features are categorized into those with abundant water (hot springs and geysers) and those with limited water (mudpots and fumaroles). Each feature is unique despite their structural similarities.
Midway Geyser Basin - Home to the Grand Prismatic Spring, the largest hot spring in the park, measuring about 370 feet (112.8 m) in diameter and over 121 feet (37 m) deep. It was first described by fur trapper Osborne Russell in 1839, making it the earliest identifiable thermal feature in Yellowstone.
Upper Geyser Basin - Old Faithful, located in the Upper Geyser Basin in the park’s southwest, offers a visitor-friendly viewing area with bench seating, ample parking, and a ranger station that monitors eruption times, heights, and durations to predict the next eruption.
Yellowstone Lake - At an elevation of 7,733 feet (2,357 m), Yellowstone Lake is the largest high-altitude lake in North America. It spans approximately 20 miles (32.2 km) in length and 14 miles (22.5 km) in width, with 141 miles (227 km) of shoreline and a surface area of 132 square miles (342 km2). The lake freezes completely each winter, with ice thickness ranging from a few inches to over two feet, and typically thaws by late May or early June. The average water temperature is 41°F (5°C), making swimming inadvisable due to the cold, with survival time estimated at only 20 to 30 minutes.
Yellowstone Geysers - Mud Volcano Area - Yellowstone is a volcanic region, with one of its most significant eruptions occurring 640,000 years ago. This event led to the formation of the Yellowstone Caldera, a large depression that filled with lava flows over millennia, forming the volcanic plateau that dominates the park’s central area.
Grand Canyon of the Yellowstone - This canyon showcases the park’s intricate geologic history through its vibrant colors and formations. Steam puffs indicate hydrothermal features within the canyon walls, while the Upper and Lower Falls of the Yellowstone River enhance the beauty of this natural wonder.
Norris Geyser Basin - Known as the hottest and most dynamic thermal area in Yellowstone, Norris Geyser Basin offers a 2 1/4 mile (3.6 km) trail to explore its features. Visitors can discover the world’s tallest active geyser, colorful hot springs, and microscopic life thriving in one of the planet’s most extreme environments.
Gibbon Falls - This waterfall cascades 84 feet (0.3 m) over a remnant of the Yellowstone caldera rim, formed by a massive volcanic eruption around 640,000 years ago.
