- Firehole Canyon Drive - Firehole Canyon Drive is a scenic 2-mile, one-way road branching off the Grand Loop south of Madison. This drive features a waterfall overlook and a designated swimming area.
- Fountain Paint Pot - The Fountain Paint Pot Trail showcases a variety of hydrothermal features, highlighting Yellowstone’s active volcanic nature. These features are categorized into those with abundant water (hot springs and geysers) and those with limited water (mudpots and fumaroles). Despite their structural similarities, each feature is unique.
- Grand Prismatic Spring - Located in the Midway Geyser Basin, Grand Prismatic Spring is the park’s largest hot spring, measuring about 370 feet (112.8 m) in diameter and over 121 feet (37 m) deep. It was first described by fur trapper Osborne Russell in 1839, making it the earliest identifiable thermal feature in Yellowstone.
- Old Faithful - Situated in Yellowstone’s Upper Geyser Basin in the southwest section of the park, Old Faithful offers the most accessible and visitor-friendly geyser-viewing area. It includes bench seating, a large parking lot, and a ranger station that monitors eruption times, heights, and durations to predict the next eruption.
- Yellowstone Lake - At an elevation of 7,733 feet (2,357 m), Yellowstone Lake is the largest high-elevation lake (above 7,000 feet / 2,134 m) in North America. It spans roughly 20 miles (32.2 km) in length and 14 miles (22.5 km) in width, with 141 miles (227 km) of shoreline and a surface area of 132 square miles (342 km²). The lake freezes completely each winter, with ice thickness ranging from a few inches to over two feet, and typically thaws in late May or early June. The water remains cold year-round, averaging 41°F (5°C), making swimming inadvisable as survival time is estimated at only 20 to 30 minutes.
- Yellowstone Geysers - Mud Volcano Area - Yellowstone is a volcano, with one of its most significant eruptions occurring 640,000 years ago. This eruption led to the formation of the Yellowstone Caldera, a large depression that filled with lava flows over millennia, forming the volcanic plateau that dominates the park’s central region.
At Mud Volcano, visitors are near one of the resurgent domes, with the hills to the east forming Sour Creek Dome. These domes are areas of active ground deformation, where land movement is influenced by the magma chamber below. Scientists closely monitor these domes for insights into ongoing volcanic activity.
Many of the park’s geysers, hot springs, mudpots, and fumaroles are located near or within the caldera.
- Hayden Valley - Hayden Valley is a vast, sub-alpine valley in Yellowstone National Park, spanning the Yellowstone River between Yellowstone Falls and Yellowstone Lake. The valley floor is an ancient lake bed from a time when Yellowstone Lake was significantly larger.
- Grand Canyon of the Yellowstone - The Grand Canyon of the Yellowstone River showcases the park’s intricate geologic history through its vibrant colors and formations. Steam puffs indicate hydrothermal features within the canyon walls, while the Upper and Lower Falls of the Yellowstone River enhance the splendor of this natural wonder.
- Norris Geyser Basin - Norris Geyser Basin is Yellowstone’s hottest and most dynamic thermal area. Visitors can explore the 2 1/4 miles (3.6 km) of trails to discover the world’s tallest active geyser, colorful hot springs, and microscopic life thriving in one of the planet’s most extreme environments.
- Gibbon Falls - Gibbon Falls cascades 84 feet (0.3 m) over a remnant of the Yellowstone caldera rim, formed by a massive volcanic eruption approximately 640,000 years ago.
This quick stop on the lower loop drive offers a perfect photo opportunity.
