Constructed between 1609 and 1617 by Ottoman architect Mehmet Aga, a student of Mimar Sinan, the mosque draws inspiration from the imperial mosques built by Sinan. Notable examples of Sinan’s work include the Suleymaniye Mosque in Istanbul and the Selimiye Mosque in Edirne. Plans were made for this mosque to be built opposite Hagia Sophia.
