After the Ottoman conquest of Constantinople in 1453, Sultan Mehmed II transformed Hagia Sophia into a mosque, incorporating Islamic elements such as minarets and mihrabs. It functioned as a mosque for nearly 500 years. In 1935, under the Republic of Turkey, Mustafa Kemal Atatürk, the founder of modern Turkey, secularized it and converted it into a museum. In July 2020, the Turkish government reconverted Hagia Sophia into a mosque, igniting global discussion and controversy regarding its role and importance as both a religious and cultural icon.

Excellent (and necessary) tour guide for the Hagia Sophia - The guide, Zeki, provided insights that I never would have acquired by just looking at the Mosque. I learned much from his descriptions. His english was pretty good too. No traveler should visit these sites without guide.

Knowledgeable and relevant - Enjoyable tour. Our guide was really knowledgeable who gave some great insights into the history of the Hagia Sophia making it easy for the kids to understand its significance.

Our guide was a no show. ... - Our guide was a no show. It was raining and I guess he/she decided not to bother. We were at the correct location German fountain, but no guide.
