- Hagia Sophia Mosque - The existing structure was constructed by Byzantine Emperor Justinian I as the Christian cathedral of Constantinople for the Byzantine Empire between 532 and 537. It was designed by Greek geometers Isidore of Miletus and Anthemius of Tralles. Originally named the Church of God’s Holy Wisdom, upon completion, it became the world’s largest interior space and was among the first to feature a fully pendentive dome.
- Blue Mosque - The Sultanahmet Mosque, commonly known as the Blue Mosque, is sometimes avoided by visitors due to crowds. Art historians often critique it for its elephantine supports and less-than-perfect tiles, reflecting the classical age’s decline. It is best appreciated from a distance, such as from the breezy terrace café of the Museum of Turkish and Islamic Art.

Sultanahmet District - The German Fountain
This gazebo-style fountain is located at the northern end of the old hippodrome (Sultanahmet Square) in Istanbul, Turkey, opposite the Mausoleum of Sultan Ahmed I. It was built to commemorate the second anniversary of German Emperor Wilhelm II’s visit to Istanbul in 1898. Constructed in Germany, it was transported piece by piece and assembled at its current location in 1900. The neo-Byzantine style fountain features an octagonal dome supported by eight marble columns, with the dome’s interior adorned with golden mosaics. -
Sultanahmet District - The Hippodrome of Constantinople
This was a circus that served as the sporting and social hub of Constantinople, the capital of the Byzantine Empire. The term hippodrome is derived from Greek. Horse racing and chariot racing were popular activities in the ancient world, and hippodromes were common in Greek cities during the Hellenistic, Roman, and Byzantine periods. - Cemberlitas Sutunu - The Column of Constantine is another structure that highlights Istanbul’s rich history. This 35-meter column was erected in 330 CE by Emperor Constantine to honor Constantinople’s designation as the seat of the Roman Empire. The impressive column, made from porphyry blocks, adorns the streets of Istanbul.
- Basilica Cistern - Ancient texts suggest that the basilica cistern featured gardens surrounded by a colonnade facing the Hagia Sophia. According to ancient historians, Emperor Constantine initially built the structure, which was later reconstructed and expanded by Emperor Justinian following the Nika riots of 532, which devastated the city. Historical records indicate that 7,000 slaves were involved in the cistern’s construction.
- Grand Bazaar - Over the centuries, Istanbul’s Grand Bazaar has earned a legendary reputation as one of the world’s most renowned shopping destinations. This ancient, bustling maze offers everything one could desire. With over 3,000 shops across 61 covered streets, the Grand Bazaar resembles a medieval shopping mall and is one of the city’s most vibrant and colorful areas.
