- Tripoli - Travel on the Moreas Motorway in Peloponnese. The A7 starts just west of the Isthmus of Corinth, diverging from Greek National Road 8A (now part of the Olympia Odos). It connects Corinth and Kalamata via Tripoli.
Under the concession agreement between the Greek state and the consortium managing the motorway (Moreas S.A.), the latter is tasked with constructing, operating, maintaining, and modernizing the A7. Improvements in existing sections include straightening dangerous curves, building new tunnels, completing the Artemision tunnel, adding more lighting, and upgrading the median throughout.
- Archaeological Site of Olympia - Olympia is one of the most significant ancient Greek sanctuaries, located in western Peloponnese, in Elis. It is situated in a peaceful and fertile valley at the meeting point of the Alpheios and Kladeos rivers. In ancient times, it was renowned beyond mainland Greece for hosting the Olympic Games every four years, starting in 776 BCE.
The archaeological site is within walking distance of the modern village called Ancient Olympia and includes ruins from the Bronze Age to the Byzantine eras. The site covers a vast area of ruins scattered among low trees, including the Temples of Zeus and Hera, Fidias Workshop, Roman Emperor Nero’s villa, the ancient stadium where the Olympic Games took place, and much more. An impressive collection of artifacts unearthed during excavations is on display at the Olympia Museum. Combined ticket: with Museums: Summer 12€ and includes Archaeological & History of the Games Museums. Under 6 y free / Over 65 y or winter time reduce half.
- Archaeological Museum of Olympia - By the time Theodosius I banned the Olympics and ordered the destruction of the temples, the sanctuary had accumulated an incredible number of buildings, fountains, baths, statues, and trophies. Despite being plundered several times in antiquity, archaeologists have uncovered a wealth of objects during excavations that began in 1875 and continue today. The Museum at Olympia houses and displays the most remarkable of these finds, some of which are worth traveling around the world to see in person.
Perhaps the most famous of all the statues in the Olympia Museum are: The Hermes of Praxiteles, The Nike of Paionios, and the helmet Miltiades dedicated to Zeus at the sanctuary after leading the Athenians to victory at Marathon. The act is inscribed on the helmet itself “ΜΙΛΤΙΑΔΕΣ ΑΝΕΘΕΚΕΝ ΤΟΙ ΔΙΙ” (the name Miltiades is clearly visible in the lower left part of the helmet). 490 BCE. A Persian helmet dedicated to Zeus by the Athenians after their victory against the Persians at Marathon.
- Archimedes Museum - Archimedes’ Museum in Ancient Olympia is a unique thematic museum in Greece dedicated to the great Mathematician, Physicist, Engineer, Astronomer, and Inventor of ancient Greece and the Ancient Greek Technology of his time.
Archimedes’ Museum is permanently located in the center of Ancient Olympia in a two-story building provided by the municipality of Ancient Olympia. This was unanimously agreed upon by the board of directors of the city of Ancient Olympia and supported by both the Commercial Union of Ancient Olympia “Hermes” and the city’s hotel owners.
Archimedes was a unique and outstanding genius in the spiritual world of all times. He contributed greatly to global culture with his theses in all the ancient sciences and, most importantly, became the foundation for the development of modern science. He invented many devices, some still in use today, and inspired Da Vinci while influencing Galileo and Newton.
Visiting is optional.
- Arkadia Region - Drive through the Arkadia mountains, one of the regional units of Greece. It is part of the administrative region of Peloponnese, situated in the central and eastern part of the Peloponnese peninsula. It is named after the mythological figure Arcas. In Greek mythology, it was the home of the god Pan. In European Renaissance arts, Arcadia was celebrated as an unspoiled, harmonious wilderness.
Arcadia is mainly grassland with some farmland and three wooded mountain ranges, but large areas are covered only by degenerated shrubland. Forests, mainly at altitudes higher than 1000 meters, remain in the central north (Mainalo), which is also a ski resort in winter, in the central south, and in the Arcadian part of the mountain range Parnon. In the southwest, “Mount Lykaion” is well known for its ancient history and myths.
- Ancient Corinth (Archaia Korinthos) - Ancient Corinth was one of the largest and most important cities of Greece, with a population of 90,000 in 400 BC. The Romans demolished Corinth in 146 BC, built a new city in its place in 44 BC, and later made it the provincial capital of Greece.
Walking through the remains of the ancient City of Corinth is like stepping back in time. For Christians, Corinth is well known from the two letters of Saint Paul in the New Testament, First and Second Corinthians. Corinth is also mentioned in the Acts of the Apostles as part of Paul the Apostle’s missionary travels. Combined ticket 8€ for summer or 4€ for winter. Under 19 y free / Over 65 y reduce half.
- Archaeological Museum of Corinth - Visit the Archaeological Museum of Ancient Corinth. The museum was built in 1931/32 by architect W. Stuart Thompson and was extended in 1950. It contains collections of prehistoric finds, various items ranging from the Geometric to the Hellenistic period, Roman and Byzantine finds, excavation finds from the Asklepieion of Corinth, and a collection of sculptures and inscriptions.
