Corinth Canal - The journey begins at the Isthmus of Corinth, a slender land bridge linking mainland Greece with the Peloponnese. Here, visitors can marvel at the manmade canal that joins the Corinthian and Saronic Gulfs. Completed in 1893, the canal’s history stretches back to 602 BC. It spans over 6km in length, with its sides reaching 78m at their tallest. Bridges allow cars and pedestrians to cross, submerging up to 12m to permit boats to pass. Discover the fascinating history of the Corinth Canal.
Ancient Corinth (Archaia Korinthos) - Situated on the Isthmus of Corinth, the ancient city-state of Corinth was a hub of historical significance, first settled during the Neolithic Period. Its strategic location facilitated control over ship transportation between the Corinthian and Saronic Gulfs, leading to its prosperity and prominence as a major trade power in ancient Greece, rivaling Athens and Thebes. By 400 BC, its population reached 90,000. The city is steeped in mythology, including the tale of Sisyphus. Although destroyed by the Romans, a new city was built in its place. With a knowledgeable guide, explore the extensive ruins of the Temple of Apollo, a testament to Corinth’s former wealth. It is also a site visited by Saint Paul, who penned letters here.
The Ancient Theatre of Epidaurus - Epidaurus is renowned for its ancient theater, constructed in the 4th century BC. Its acoustics are legendary, allowing words spoken on stage to be heard clearly from any seat in the audience.
Archaeological Site Mycenae - Mycenae was a pivotal center of early Greek culture, with settlement dating back to the second millennium BC. According to Homer, it was the realm of Agamemnon, who led the Greeks in the Trojan War to reclaim Helen, wife of his brother Menelaus. The ruins are famed for the “Cyclopean walls,” so named because later Greeks believed only a Cyclops could have moved such massive stones. Visitors can see the Lion Gate, the entrance to the royal court and palace, and nearby tombs of legendary figures like Aegisthus and Clytemnestra.
Palamidi Castle - Moving forward in time, explore Palamidi Castle in Nafplio, the first capital of modern Greece. Built by the Venetians, it is famous for its 999 steps. Legend has it that there were originally 1000 steps, but one was destroyed by Theodoros Kolokotronis, a leader in the Greek War of Independence, during a victory celebration against the Ottomans.
Ancient Olympia, Diolkos
Archaeological Site of Olympia - Journey to the valley of the river Alfios, where a professional guide leads a tour of the ancient Olympia ruins, the historic site of the Olympic Games. This was the most prestigious of the Panhellenic Games, where every four years, Greeks from various city-states would set aside their conflicts to compete.
The significance of Olympia is evident in its ruins, including the Temple of Zeus, which once housed a 13-meter statue of the god crafted from gold and ivory, the Temple of Hera, the stadium, and the Shrine of Pelops. Today, the Olympic Flame is still ignited in Olympia and carried in a relay to the host city of the Olympic Games.
The Diolkos - Conclude the two-day tour with a visit to the Diolkos, an ancient “road” that linked the Saronic Gulf and the Corinthian Gulf, where ships were transported overland for a fee.
