Corinth Canal - The Corinth Canal links the Gulf of Corinth with the Saronic Gulf in the Aegean Sea. It traverses the narrow Isthmus of Corinth, effectively separating the Peloponnese from the Greek mainland, which arguably turns the peninsula into an island. The canal is dug at sea level through the Isthmus and does not have any locks. It stretches 6.4 kilometers (4 miles) in length and is only 21.4 meters (70 ft) wide at its base, making it unsuitable for most modern ships. Today, it holds little economic significance and primarily serves as a tourist attraction. The canal was first proposed in classical times, with an unsuccessful attempt to construct it in the 1st century AD. Construction began in 1881 but faced geological and financial challenges that led to the bankruptcy of the original builders. It was completed in 1893, but due to its narrowness, navigational issues, and frequent closures for landslide repairs from its steep walls, it did not attract the anticipated level of traffic.

Diakopto - Diakofto is a charming seaside town offering a stunning view of the Corinthian Gulf. The town is renowned for the “Odontotos” train, which travels through the Vouraikos Gorge on a scenic route to Kalavrita.
The Diakopto – Kalavryta Rack Railway is a popular tourist attraction. This train can reach high altitudes and operate on steep grades, passing through areas of unique interest and breathtaking views.
The journey, lasting about one hour, begins in Diakopto. The rack railway travels through the Vouraikos Gorge and the village of Zachlorou, concluding in Kalavryta. The train covers a 22-kilometer journey, traveling at speeds of 30-40 km/h on regular tracks and 6-15 km/h on toothed racks.
The railway network features toothed tracks on steep gradients.
The classification of the railway as “Rack” or “Cog” comes from the cog wheels these trains use, which mesh with the rack rail, enabling them to operate on steep grades.
The train is equipped with special pinions inside the wheels, which engage when the gradient increases, latching onto the rail during both ascent and descent. The train covers a distance of 22 kilometers and reaches an altitude of 750 meters. The journey lasts approximately one hour, starting from Diakopto and ending in Kalavryta, with a stop in Megalo Spilaio.
It passes through the gorge alongside the Vouraikos River, which creates small and larger waterfalls and natural pools. At the location Katarraktis, the river plunges dramatically and almost vertically beneath the railway bridge.
The next stop is Dikastiria, named after a small semicircular cave where stalactites have formed a stunning scene resembling a courtroom. The journey concludes at the traditional town of Kalavryta.

Kalavrita - Kalavryta is a mountainous town located on the northern side of the Peloponnese. This town holds historical significance as one of the most tragic massacres occurred there during World War II when Nazi troops killed the entire male population. According to tradition, it was also in Kalavryta, at the Monastery of Agia Lavra, where the Greek Revolution against the Ottomans was declared on March 25th, 1821. Holidays in Kalavryta are ideal for the winter season due to the nearby ski center on the slopes of Mount Helmos. Visitors to Kalavryta can enjoy strolling around the town, sampling local products, and savoring lunch or coffee.

Kastria Cave of the Lakes - In the village of Kastria in Achaia lies the renowned “Cave of the Lakes.” It is a rare natural wonder. Beyond its labyrinth of corridors, mysterious galleries, and unusual stalactite formations, the “Cave of the Lakes” boasts something uniquely exclusive that is not found in other well-known caves. Inside the cave, a series of cascading lakes form three distinct levels, establishing its uniqueness worldwide.
The cave is an ancient subterranean river with an explored length of 1980 meters. In winter, when the snow melts, the cave transforms into a subterranean river with natural waterfalls. During the summer months, part of the cave dries up, revealing a lacework of stone basins and dams up to 4 meters in height. The rest of the cave retains water year-round in 13 picturesque lakes.
