- Archaeological Site of Olympia - Known as the birthplace of the Olympic Games, this site hosted the games from 776 BC to 393 AD, spanning 12 centuries of glory and honor. Olympia was recognized in Greece as a premier religious and sports hub. The archaeological site, one of the largest in the nation, has provided a wealth of monuments and artworks, including the Hermes of Praxiteles. Visitors can explore the stadium (with a capacity of 45,000), the temples of Hera and Zeus, the Philippion, the Council House, the workshop of Phidias, and in the museum, the HELMET OF GENERAL MILTIADES, who triumphed over the Persians at Marathon in 490 BC.
- Holy Monastery of Saint John the Forerunner - The tour offers two options for visitors. The first option is to visit the Great Cave of Gortynia, perched on a rock in the Lousios Gorge. Tradition holds that the monastery was established in the 12th century by monks from nearby hermitages. At the end of the monastery’s small courtyard, with its stone-built fountain (1748), stands a heavy, imposing door marked by bullet holes from the Turks in 1779. The interior and part of the surrounding rock are adorned with 16th-century frescoes. The hospitable monks offer visitors coffee, refreshing water, and olives while they enjoy the breathtaking view of the gorge’s ascetic paradises. The monastery boasts a significant library, and the monks engage in the art of iconography and the sewing of ecclesiastical vestments.
- Kakovatos Beach - The second option is swimming and lunch by the sea. After immersing in history, visitors can enjoy a swim at one of the Peloponnese’s most beautiful beaches, located near ancient Olympia. Lunch will be served before returning to Athens. (Swimming at the beach is available during the summer months.)
