- Vatican Museums - Begin your exploration at the illustrious Vatican Museums. Besides being the Pope’s residence, Vatican City also hosts the Vatican Museums, boasting the world’s largest art collection with 9 miles of artwork that could encircle the Vatican walls 4 ½ times! It features 54 museums, 1400 rooms, chapels, and galleries. In addition to the famous Sistine Chapel, the museums showcase the only Leonardo Da Vinci piece in Rome, St. Jerome, the Raphael Rooms, and the Pinoteca, which houses collections of the Popes, all dating back to the Middle Ages and arranged in chronological order.
- Sistine Chapel - Michelangelo’s Sistine Chapel is arguably the most renowned masterpiece today, attracting over 5 million visitors annually. The artist reluctantly undertook this project, as his primary interest was sculpture, and he often lamented the physical strain it imposed on him. It is believed that the chapel’s design by Pope Sixtus IV is inspired by Solomon’s temple from the Old Testament, measuring slightly larger than a professional basketball court! Numerous other frescoes by artists such as Domenico Ghirlandaio, Pietro Perugino, Cosimo Roselli, and Sandro Botticelli can also be admired here.
- St. Peter’s Basilica - The tour concludes with a secret entry into St. Peter’s Basilica: the largest basilica globally, with interior markings to ensure every other basilica could fit inside. Visitors are greeted by Michelangelo’s Pieta at the front, 150 mosaics, and Bernini’s baldacchino, which stands 96 feet tall and weighs 100,000 pounds of bronze! Interestingly, there is only one actual painting in the basilica, located above the Pieta. Many popes are interred within the church or displayed, but most are buried beneath the basilica, including St. Peter, the first pope.
