- Jantar Mantar - Jaipur - Recognized as a UNESCO World Heritage Site, Jantar Mantar in Jaipur is the largest among the five astronomical observatories established by Maharaja Sawai Jai Singh II, the founder of Jaipur. It features sixteen geometric instruments designed to measure time, track celestial bodies, and observe planetary orbits around the sun. Additionally, it includes an Interpretation Centre that aids tourists in understanding the observatory’s working principles and history.
- Hawa Mahal - Palace of Wind - Constructed in 1799 by Maharaja Sawai Pratap Singh, Hawa Mahal, or the Palace of Winds, is Jaipur’s most iconic monument, made from pink sandstone. This distinctive five-storey building with small latticed windows (known as jharokhas) combines Hindu and Islamic architectural styles. Initially designed for royal ladies to view street processions and activities, it now hosts a well-organized museum.
- Amber Palace - Located approximately 11 kilometers from Jaipur, Amber (pronounced Amer) is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and was the stronghold of the Kachwahas of Amber until the capital moved to the plains, now known as Jaipur. Nestled in rugged hills, the palace is a stunning blend of Hindu and Mughal architecture. Raja Man Singh I initiated its construction in 1592, and it was completed by Mirja Raja Jai Singh as a fortified refuge against invaders. The stark contrast between its formidable exterior and inviting interior is striking. Constructed entirely of red sandstone and white marble, the palace captivates visitors with its intricate carvings, precious stones, and mirrors. The palace’s grandeur is further enhanced by the breathtaking view of Maota Lake in front. With a history spanning nearly seven centuries, the palace boasts a legendary past.
- City Palace of Jaipur - Situated within the walled city, the City Palace Complex was envisioned and constructed by Maharaja Sawai Jai Singh II, Jaipur’s founder. A splendid amalgamation of Mughal and Rajput architecture, the palace remains the residence of the last ruling royal family, who occupy a private section. While Maharaja Sawai Jai Singh II is credited with building most of the structures, subsequent rulers expanded it. The City Palace Complex includes the Diwan-E-Am (Hall of Public Audience), Diwan-E-Khas (Hall of Private Audience), Mubarak Mahal (Palace of Reception), and the Maharani’s Palace (Palace of the Queen). Mubarak Mahal now houses the Maharaja Sawai Man Singh II Museum, showcasing a vast and unique collection of royal costumes, including those of Maharaja Sawai Madho Singh I. The Maharani’s Palace intriguingly displays well-preserved Rajput weaponry. Besides the arms, the palace is adorned with beautifully maintained ceiling paintings.
- Jaigarh Fort - Perched on a hilltop, 15 km from Jaipur, is Jaigarh Fort, constructed by Sawai Jai Singh II. Despite its ancient origins, it retains much of its formidable citadel appearance. Visitors to the fort can view the world’s largest cannon, Jaiban, located here.
