The Taj Mahal premises are surrounded on three sides by walled structures made of red sandstone, featuring an open side toward the river. Outside these walls, there are numerous other mausoleums, counting those belonging to Shah Jahan’s other wives, and a larger burial site for the favoured servant of Mumtaz.

The main entrance (darwaza) is a significant structure made mostly of marble, reflecting the architectural style of past Mughal emperors. Its arches mimic the design of the tomb’s arches, and its pishtaq arches feature the same calligraphy that adorns the tomb. The arched ceilings and walls showcase intricate geometric patterns, similar to those in other sandstone establishments within the complex.
