Tazia Tower - Tazia Tower and Badal Palace, Jaisalmer Overview
Located within the stunning Badal Palace complex, the five-story Tazia Tower holds significance in Jaisalmer. Tazia Tower is a replica of the mausoleum of various Muslim imams, with intricate carvings on the tombstone walls that reflect rich ancient art made from thermocol, wood, and colored papers. The Badal Palace near the Amar Sagar Gate has a cloud-like appearance, with the Tazia Tower emerging from it. This tower is entirely distinct from the typical Rajputana architecture of Rajasthan. These were homes to the royal families of Rajasthan, built by Muslim craftsmen who shaped it as a Tazia, symbolizing their religion. - Nathmal Ji Ki Haveli - Nathmal Ji Ki Haveli was commissioned as the residence of Diwan Mohata Nathmal, the then Prime Minister of Jaisalmer. Maharawal Beri Sal commissioned the construction of this Haveli. The architects of this haveli were brothers Hathi and Lulu. An interesting story surrounds its construction: it is said that the two brothers began building different facets of the haveli simultaneously. In those days, there were no instruments to ensure continuity, resulting in the building’s irregular shape.
- Kothari’s Patwaon-Ki-Haveli - Kothari’s Patwa Haveli is one of the finest, oldest, and largest havelis in Jaisalmer, filled with artistic work in every corner, from gracefully carved pillars to the façade and balconies (Jharokhas). Kothari’s Patwa Haveli features expensive decorative items imported from various countries. The murals and interiors draw inspiration from Rajputi, Mughal, and Victorian architecture.
- Salim Singh-ki Haveli - Salim Singh Ki Haveli was constructed in 1815 by Salim Singh, the prime minister of the kingdom when Jaisalmer was the capital. This mansion was built without cement and mortar; the stones are connected with strong iron rods. This mansion is renowned for its unique architecture, featuring 38 elegantly carved balconies. The architecture of this mansion is inspired by a dancing peacock. One of the most ambitious constructions of its time, the Haveli was so magnificent that it even aroused the ruler’s envy during its era.
- Jaisalmer Fort - Jaisalmer Fort is located in the city of Jaisalmer, in the Indian state of Rajasthan. It is considered one of the few “living forts” in the world, as nearly one-fourth of the old city’s population still resides within the fort. For most of its 800-year history, the fort was the city of Jaisalmer.
- Surya Gate - The Surya Gate is one of the four entry gates to the 12th-century Jaisalmer Fort. The fort on Trikuta Hill has four successive gates: Akai, Surya, Ganesh, and Hawa, through which visitors must pass. A key feature of the gate is its construction on a bend, designed for military strategy. As elephants were used in warfare in ancient times, it required great power to break down walls, but with gates situated on a curve, it demanded even greater skill to breach.
- Jain Temples - The Jain Temples in Jaisalmer are marvelous treasures of the desert city, holding archaeological value and religious significance. Dating back to the 12th and 15th centuries, these temples feature intricate designs.
- Gadisar Lake - Gadisar Lake is a man-made water reservoir that was once the sole water source in Jaisalmer. Constructed by the first ruler of Jaisalmer, Raja Rawal Jaisal, it is surrounded by temples and ghats (banks). Visitors can enjoy peaceful moments in the serene surroundings of the lake or opt for boating. Boating and observing the calm water in its natural setting can be a delightful experience for everyone at Gadisar Lake.
- Desert Culture Centre & Museum - An important landmark in Jaisalmer, the Desert Cultural Centre & Museum showcases local musical instruments, ancient coins and currency, traditional women’s jewelry, hunting gear, historical displays of rulers, and artillery and armor from bygone era armies. Tourists can enjoy a live puppet show here. The museum is well-maintained by Jaisalmer tourism and features rare coins related to Jaisalmer’s history and Rajasthan’s past.
- Vyas Chhatri - This atmospheric collection of golden sandstone chhatris (cenotaphs) in an old Brahmin memorial ground on a rise on the northwestern edge of town forms a popular sunset point from which to view the fort. Enter from Ramgarh Rd opposite the Himmatgarh Palace Hotel.
- Bada Bagh - Bada Bagh, also known as Barabagh, is a garden complex about 6 km north of Jaisalmer on the way to Ramgarh, in the state of Rajasthan, India. Overlooking a mango grove sits a set of royal cenotaphs, or chhatris, of the Maharajas of Jaisalmer state, starting with Jai Singh II.
