This narrow river valley is alive with volcanic activity, and locals have created artificial ponds near thermal springs of varying temperatures, some with bamboo pipes for a hot “shower.” The newest and largest of these pools, which is also the most accessible, is heart-shaped. Pools of warm mud offer the chance for a mud spa, believed to have medicinal benefits for your skin. Relax and enjoy the hot springs, then continue driving back and stop for lunch at a Sundanese restaurant with a view of Mount Patuha. Finish and drive to Garut for an overnight stay.

At the time, they didn’t know the sounds were from gas escaping from fumaroles.
