Karajia Sarcophagi & Quiocta Cavern

Sarcophagi of Karajia - In the morning, travel to Cruz Pata town, then proceed to the Karajia burial site. Enjoy a panoramic view of Luya’s main square en route. Cruz Pata, known as the Crosses Plateau, is the starting point for a 30-minute journey by foot or horse to Karajia. The Karajia sarcophagi, part of the Chachapoyas pre-Inca culture, are crafted from stone, wood, and clay, featuring an anthropomorphic design. They are notable for their large size (up to 2.5 meters high) and intricate craftsmanship. Despite the passage of time, their location atop a cliff with challenging access has preserved them well. Return to Luya for lunch, then visit the Quiocta Caverns, a natural wonder located in the Lamud district, Luya province. Inside, there are seven rooms with stalagmites and stalactites, each uniquely named for its curious shapes. Return to Chachapoyas City.

Revash Mausoleum Trek & Museum of Leymebamba Mummies

Revash Mausoleum of the Chachapoyas - After breakfast, travel to San Bartolo town, then ride horseback to the Revash Mausoleums. These funeral homes are built at the base of large rocks and painted in red and cream, resembling small houses. Some are up to three stories high, with gable roofs and T-shaped, cross-shaped, and square windows. The mausoleums can be viewed from approximately 100 meters away, offering a strategic vantage point to appreciate the funerary complex. After the visit, enjoy lunch. Then, visit the Centro Mallqui or Leymebamba Museum, designed to reflect local architectural traditions. The surrounding gardens are adorned with rich and varied flora, including over 100 local orchid varieties. The museum houses a valuable collection of 240 mummies discovered in the Lagoon of the Condors. Return to Chachapoyas.

Shachapuyus Kuelap Citadel

Fortress of Kuelap - In the morning, visit Kuelap, a magnificent architectural site constructed by the Chachapoyas. En route, make a brief stop for a panoramic view of the Macro Archaeological site, also known as “Macro Towers” due to its distinctive design. Macro is situated on a hillside overlooking the Utcubamba River. Continue to Nuevo Tingo town, where a bus will take you to the Cable Car station. The modern cable cars provide a short and safe journey to the starting point of the Kuelap visit. Ascend on foot or horseback to the “Fortress,” located atop Cerro Barreta (3,000 m.a.s.l.). Kuelap is surrounded by stunning landscapes and appears initially inaccessible due to its massive walls and cliffs on three sides. It features three platforms and circular buildings adorned with rhomboidal and zigzag friezes, indicating a well-organized community. The breathtaking scenery makes it an unforgettable experience. Return to Nuevo Tingo town for lunch, then head back to Chachapoyas City.
