Shimonoseki City in Yamaguchi Prefecture is renowned as the site of the Battle of Dan-no-Ura, the final clash between the Minamoto and Taira clans. Initially, the Taira had the upper hand, but as the tide turned, the Minamoto gained dominance. Ultimately, the Minamoto emerged victorious, marking the beginning of the Kamakura era in Japan.
Today, it is known as Mimosuso River Park, a city park offering a splendid view of the Kanmon Strait. There is a monument commemorating the Dan-no-Ura Old Battlefield site and informative displays about the battle. Visitors can also see handprints of famous actors from the NHK TV drama “Yoshitsune,” aired in 2005.

Rurikoji Temple is a Soto Zen temple located in Kozan-cho, Yamaguchi City, Yamaguchi Prefecture. The temple grounds, known as Kozan Park, are centered around the five-story pagoda, a national treasure.
Kayama Park is also a renowned spot for its cherry blossoms, plum blossoms, azaleas, hydrangeas, and more, and has been selected as one of Japan’s 100 Best Historical Parks.

Yamaguchi’s Catholic church was constructed in 1952 to mark the 400th anniversary of Spanish missionary Francis Xavier’s arrival in Japan. After being destroyed by fire in 1991, it was rebuilt in 1998 with donations from citizens. Its modern design resembles a large tent. The building includes a museum on the ground floor with exhibits about Xavier’s life and the spread of Christianity in Japan. As you exit the church, take the stairs leading to the hilltop Kameyama Park for a panoramic city view.
