Old Fort Point Road - In July 2024, a significant wildfire swept through Jasper National Park, devastating over 33,000 hectares of land. This was the largest wildfire in Jasper National Park in more than a century.
A year later, the 55-million-year-old landscape, now without its leafy canopy, showcases recovering flora, returning wildlife, and a promising future.
On the Wildfire Peak-Nic, participants will hike 4 KM through the severely affected area of the Complex Wildfire to reach one of Jasper’s notable peaks. As the guide leads through the new growth forest emerging from the ashes, participants will learn to identify various species of plants, wildflowers, and mushrooms, and gain insights into history, geology, forestry, wildfires, and observe wildlife from a safe distance. Upon reaching the peak, participants will enjoy 360-degree views of the different yet breathtaking vistas for miles and learn about the roles and benefits of a wildfire over a packed lunch with the guide. **Note: Lunch is no longer cooked at the top; it is a packed lunch due to the change in landscape from the wildfires and the lack of wind shelters.
Beautiful in its own way, this is a one-of-a-kind experience and a unique immersion into the aftermath of the powerful forces of nature.”}
