- Zhaishan Tunnel - Guests will be picked up from their hotel around 7 AM and taken to Xiamen Wutong Wharf. From there, they will enjoy a luxurious ferry ride to Kinmen Shuitou Commercial Port. Upon arrival, the first stop is Zhaishan Tunnel. Entering the tunnel, visitors are struck by the awe-inspiring scale of this massive structure. Zhaishan Tunnel is a significant remnant of Taiwan’s military history, constructed to withstand bombings from mainland China during the 1958 shelling. This two-part tunnel, measuring 101 meters (331 feet) in length, was crucial for transporting supplies to the island’s defenders. Construction began in 1958 and continued non-stop for three years until completion. The tunnel, entirely carved from granite, is an engineering marvel. Its water channel, 357 meters (1,171 feet) long, can accommodate 42 small boats and is connected to the tunnel. It was abandoned in 1986 due to sediment buildup.
- Chen Shih-Yin Western-Style House - Next, visitors will explore the Chen Jing-lan Western-style House. This remarkable mansion was built by a successful Kinmen businessman in Singapore in the early 1900s. Its all-white exterior, intricate carvings, and symmetrical archways give it a distinctly Western appearance. Inside, guests can learn about its fascinating history and diverse occupants. The second floor features stories and photographs of various Kinmen residents who ventured abroad for better opportunities.
- Kinmen National Park - Following this, the tour proceeds to Kinmen National Park, Taiwan’s first national park dedicated to preserving historical and cultural relics, including battlefield monuments. In the 16th century, Japanese pirates frequently attacked Kinmen, prompting the government to fortify the island with defenses. Since 1949, Kinmen has been a battleground between the Chinese Communist Party and the Kuomintang. Battlefield relics include the Guningtou Battle Museum and the August 23rd Artillery Battle Museum.
- Kinmen - In the afternoon, guests will transfer to Kinmen Guesthouse, a unique tunnel hotel carved through granite. Renowned during the civil war, it was completed in 1980 and is often referred to as the “underground Hilton.” The guesthouse features 31 rooms within a 320-meter long tunnel. Two original rooms have been preserved: one hosted former Singapore Prime Minister Lee Kuan Yew, and the other accommodated Teresa Teng during her performances for soldiers in Kinmen, Room No. 018.
- Juguanglou - No visit to Kinmen is complete without seeing Juguang Tower, a landmark from the Chinese civil war era. Built in 1953 to honor Kinmen’s fallen soldiers from the Battle of Guningtou four years earlier, it symbolizes Kinmen’s resilience. The tower’s unique architecture combines a traditional Chinese tower with a modern base. Two small cannons at the front date back to the Ming and Qing dynasties. Finally, guests will return to the wharf and head back to Xiamen.
