Yulin Grotto - At 8 am, the guide will greet you at your centrally located Dunhuang hotel. You will then embark on a 2-hour drive to the Yulin Caves. These caves are carved into the cliffs on both sides of the Yulin River valley. Currently, there are 42 main caves, along with hundreds of smaller ones scattered around, with 31 on the east bank and 11 on the west bank. The initial group of caves was constructed during the Northern Wei dynasty, with additional caves being added or restored in subsequent dynasties. The cave designs and paintings are closely linked to those in the Mogao Grottoes, making them a significant part of the Dunhuang art complex, with immense historical and artistic value. The grottoes house nearly a thousand statues and over a thousand square meters of frescoes. You will follow the cave guide to explore some caves and learn about their history.
Note: Entrance fees for both caves cover regular caves only; additional fees apply locally for special cave visits. - Suoyang City Ruins - Next, you will visit the Suoyang City Ruins, which were added to UNESCO’s World Cultural Heritage list in 2014. Established during the Han Dynasty (202 BC-220 AD), this border town flourished in the Tang Dynasty (618-907). Suoyang City was gradually abandoned after the Jiayuguan Pass closed in 1524. Today, you can see towers, houses, lanes, and city walls in the ruins.
-
Guazhou County - Afterwards, you will proceed to the impressive statue of Sun of the Earth. The statue stands 4.3 meters tall and 15 meters long. It is a remarkable sight to behold such a large statue in the Gobi Desert.
A Chinese lunch is included today.
Later, you will be transported back to your hotel in Dunhuang, concluding the delightful day trip.
