In search of a new adventure beyond the waves, I found myself drawn to the vibrant culture of Guatemala. The promise of an authentic cooking class and market tour in Antigua was too enticing to resist, offering a taste of local life and flavors.

A Market Stroll with a Local Twist

The day began with a gentle stroll through the vibrant streets of Antigua, where the sun kissed the cobblestones and the air was filled with the scent of fresh produce. Pampa, our guide, met us at the hotel with a warm smile and an infectious enthusiasm for Guatemalan culture. As we wandered through the bustling market, Pampa’s knowledge of local fruits, vegetables, and spices was as refreshing as a cool ocean breeze. His English was impeccable, and his stories about the market’s history and its vendors added layers of depth to the experience.

The market was a sensory delight, with colorful stalls brimming with exotic fruits and aromatic herbs. I couldn’t help but draw parallels to the vibrant beach towns I’ve explored in Central America, where life is lived in full color. Pampa’s insights made the market come alive, and I found myself eagerly jotting down notes, much like I do when analyzing wave conditions for the perfect surf spot.

Cooking with a View

After our market adventure, a short tuktuk ride whisked us away to the cooking school, where we were greeted by Dario, our chef for the day. The school was perched on a rooftop terrace, offering a breathtaking view of the surrounding landscape. It reminded me of those serene moments on a surfboard, gazing out at the endless horizon.

Dario’s passion for Guatemalan cuisine was evident as he guided us through the preparation of our chosen dishes. The day concluded with a tuktuk ride back to the hotel, my heart full and my mind buzzing with new experiences. This Guatemalan Cooking Adventure was more than just a cooking class; it was a journey into the heart of Guatemala, a reminder of the beauty found in simple pleasures and shared moments.
