Built in 1899, the royal cenotaph of Maharaja Jaswant Singh II (the 33rd Rathore ruler of Jodhpur) is crafted from intricately carved marble sheets, earning it the nickname “The Taj Mahal of Marwar.”
Rao Jodha Desert Rock Park was established in 2006 to restore the natural ecology of a vast 70-hectare rocky wasteland near the Mehrangarh Fort, following years of neglect. The park and its surroundings feature unique volcanic rock and sandstone formations.
Located on Chittar Hill, the construction of the Umaid Bhawan Palace spanned 14 years, employing 2,000-3,000 workers. This palace was initially built to provide employment to farmers during a drought and famine that lasted three consecutive years in the 1920s. King Umaid Singh commissioned British architect Henry V. Lanchester to design the golden-yellow sandstone palace, which showcases an ‘Indo-Deco’ architectural style, blending Western technology with Indian architectural elements.
Just outside Jodhpur’s old city lies the handicraft market, where visitors can also enjoy the painting school.
