Discover the unique street that is home to two Nobel Peace Prize winners. Visit the Apartheid Museum to explore the path to freedom and the liberation movements. Take an enlightening walk to Constitution Hill to learn about prison life during apartheid and explore our Constitutional Court, the highest court in the land. Nelson Mandela, originally named Rolihlahla Mandela (1918-2013), was a towering figure in the fight against racial oppression in South Africa. Here’s a brief overview of his extraordinary life:
Anti-Apartheid Activism: Mandela joined the African National Congress (ANC) and co-founded its Youth League, both committed to dismantling apartheid, the oppressive system of racial segregation in South Africa.
Imprisonment: When peaceful protests proved ineffective, Mandela led the ANC’s armed wing. He was arrested in 1962 and spent 27 years in prison, most notably on Robben Island.
