It features dramatic film footage depicting the rise and fall of apartheid. Visitors can explore 22 exhibition areas at their own pace, showcasing different periods under apartheid rule with film footage, photographs, text panels, and artifacts.
• FNB Stadium - Pass by this iconic landmark, the largest football stadium in Africa, which hosted the opening ceremony, matches, and final of the 2010 FIFA World Cup.
• Diepkloof Park - A welcoming area to Soweto, divided into sections. Diepkloof Extension is an upscale part of Soweto, characterized by large, owner-built houses owned by the Black lower and upper middle class. It has higher than average house prices compared to other Soweto suburbs.
• Chris Hani Baragwanath Academic Hospital - This public hospital is the third largest in the world, covering about 173 acres (0.70 km2), with around 3,200 beds and approximately 6,760 staff members. Enjoy a view of the hospital as you drive past and hear interesting stories about it.
• Orlando Towers - These two cooling towers are a notable landmark in Soweto, now serving as an entertainment center with a famous bungee jump and a barbecue restaurant. Visitors can enjoy panoramic views of the township from the top of these impressive 100m tall towers.
• Vilakazi Street - Known as the vibrant heart of Soweto, Vilakazi Street is one of South Africa’s most famous streets. It is the only street in the world to have had two Nobel Laureates, Nelson Mandela and Archbishop Emeritus Desmond Tutu, as residents. The street’s true vibrancy comes from its current residents, each with their own unique stories. Sakhumzi Restaurant, located near the Mandela House Museum, offers a Soweto-style buffet featuring traditional South African cuisine like umngqusho (samp and beans), mogodu (tripe), and dombolo (steamed bread), along with signature dishes named after various Soweto locations.
• Mandela House - A site guide will welcome you with a brief introduction and lead a guided tour of this museum, once the home of Nelson Mandela. Visitors can take numerous photos inside and outside the house. This museum, a significant heritage site, showcases exhibits and artifacts from Mandela’s life, telling stories through sound, film, interpretive panels, and guided tours.
• Hector Pieterson Museum and Memorial - This museum chronicles the 1976 Soweto student uprising and is named after one of its victims, a thirteen-year-old boy. It stands as a symbol of resistance against apartheid brutality. The guide will explain the history of the Soweto uprisings as you drive past this memorial.
