- Houghton Estate - Located on Munro Drive in Houghton Estate, an upscale suburb of Johannesburg, this spot is the highest outdoor point in the city. The viewpoint is a heritage site and national monument, offering stunning elevated views of the lush surroundings. It’s a perfect stop for panoramic shots!
- Nizamiye Mosque - Next stop is the Nizamiye Mosque in Midrand, situated between Johannesburg & Pretoria. It is the largest mosque in the southern hemisphere, showcasing exquisite Turkish craftsmanship and towering minarets.
Construction of the Nizamiye Masjid began in October 2009 and was completed in 2012. The mosque’s design is inspired by the 16th-century Ottoman Selimiye Mosque in Edirne, Turkey, created by Mimar Sinan. The Nizamiye Masjid is scaled to 80% of the Selimiye Mosque. The plans were designed in Turkey and adapted by a South African architect to meet local building standards.
Enjoy a Turkish lunch at one of the mosque’s restaurants, and don’t miss the freshly made baklava!
- Groenkloof Nature Reserve - This is the first stop in Pretoria, located at the highest point in the city within the Groenkloof Nature Reserve, the first nature reserve established in Africa. From here, you can enjoy panoramic views of the entire city. While driving through the reserve, you may encounter friendly wildlife such as zebras, wildebeests, and giraffes.
- Union Buildings - Completed in 1913, the Union Buildings stand proudly in Pretoria. Designed by Sir Herbert Baker, this iconic building houses the presidential offices of South Africa’s president. The gardens and buildings are a photographer’s dream, surrounded by beautifully terraced gardens of indigenous plants. Various monuments adorn the expansive lawns, including the Delville Wood War Memorial and a statue of the country’s first Prime Minister, Louis Botha.
