Hector Pieterson Museum and Memorial - Zolile Hector Pieterson (19 August 1963 – 16 June 1976) was a South African schoolboy tragically shot and killed at the age of 12 during the Soweto uprising. This occurred when police opened fire on black students protesting against the enforcement of Afrikaans, predominantly spoken by the white and coloured population in South Africa, as the medium of instruction for all school subjects. The students preferred to learn in their native languages, Xhosa and Zulu. A news photograph by Sam Nzima captured the moment Pieterson was carried by another Soweto resident while his sister ran alongside, and it was published worldwide. His death anniversary is commemorated as Youth Day in South Africa.

This historic site was where, on 26 June 1955, the Congress of the People convened to draft the Freedom Charter, presenting an alternative vision to the oppressive policies of the apartheid regime. The document emphasized a non-racial society, liberty, and individual rights. The Freedom Charter remains a cornerstone of African National Congress policy and is regarded by many as the foundation of South Africa’s 1996 constitution.
