Important Information for International Customers

◉ International Driver’s License Requirements
An international driver’s license and passport must be presented. The validity of an international driver’s license in Japan is one year from the issuance date and one year from the arrival date in Japan. However, if an individual listed in Japan’s Basic Resident Register departs Japan with departure confirmation or re-entry permission, obtains a new international driver’s license while abroad for less than three months, and then returns to Japan, the re-entry date does not mark the start of the driving period for the international driver’s license, thus driving in Japan is not permitted. Additionally, driving with an international driver’s license issued under conventions other than the Geneva Conventions (such as the Vienna Convention) is not allowed in Japan, even if issued by a Geneva Conventions member state.

◉ Using a Foreign Driver’s License
Driver’s licenses from only five countries and one region are accepted: Principality of Monaco, Swiss Confederation, Federal Republic of Germany, French Republic, Kingdom of Belgium, and Taiwan. Applicants must provide a Japanese translation prepared by an individual designated by Cabinet Order.
