木楽里（kirari） - At the Kirari woodworking studio, where the craft experience takes place, a forestry master—referred to as a “mountain artist”—will provide a lecture on Nishikawa timber and the history of local forestry.
Next, you will visit a certified forest site that is usually closed to the public. The tour starts with a visit to a shrine dedicated to the mountain guardian deity. You will then explore the forest, learning about the care of ancient trees, unique cultivation techniques, and the surrounding ecosystem.
Enjoy the aromas of three different types of wood, find a tree that resonates with you, and relax at its base, quietly “conversing” with it.
Back at the studio, select a kanji character and use a pyrography pen to inscribe it onto a wooden piece shaped like Edo Castle. This hands-on craft becomes a unique smartphone stand to take home as a special souvenir. - Higashi-Agano Station - The guide will drive you back to Higashi-Agano Station, where the tour concludes. Around lunchtime, you will arrive at Hannō Station—feel free to enjoy lunch at one of the guide’s recommended local restaurants! (Please note that the guide will not join you for lunch.)

This exceptional experience invites participants into a certified private timber forest near Tokyo, usually inaccessible to the public, to discover how Japanese architecture starts with trees and sustainable forest management. Led by a master forester whose family has stewarded these mountains for over 300 years, participants will learn how forests were purposefully nurtured to yield strong, straight, and durable timber for Edo period architecture and beyond.
The experience features a hands-on thinning demonstration and a crafting session using local timber historically utilized in buildings. Participants will create a tangible keepsake, illustrating how Japanese architecture begins long before construction.
This tour is ideal for travelers interested in architecture and Japanese environmental philosophy, providing a unique chance to appreciate Japan’s architectural heritage from its material origins.

Forestry experience - It was a very fun and informative experience. As a student studying architecture this tour gave me very valuable insight into the history and practice of wood as a material in Japan. I would highly recommend it, the guides are very knowledgeable and attentive to details and the activities are fun.

A Unique Adventure: 300 Years of Japanese Forestry Tradition - This was a wonderful short excursion, combining history, ecological stewardship, and hands on craftswork!
Guided by 15th generation head of the Kirari Millwork Shop, my companions and I were introduced to the legacy and history of the region’s famous Nishikawa Timber and the 300 years our guide’s family has spent practicing forestry in the surrounding mountains.
Offering an informational session, a brief tour of the family’s private forest, and the opportunity to create personalized souvenirs, this tour presents a wonderful opportunity for anyone looking to find unusual experiences in their exploration of Japan.
In my own experience, I found the tour to be a heartfelt, grounded, and environmentally-conscious experience run by people who truly care about the quality of work and maintenance of the forest they steward. Although the tour is partially provided in Japanese, English translation services were made available during my time on the trip, and I found no issues in raising questions or seeking additional explanations to fill in cultural gaps. I had a fantastic time and could not say nicer things about the family in charge of hosting.

Amazing Forest walk and Forest bathing! - Forest Tour in Hanno City!
・Forest Walk
It felt wonderful to walk through the rich forest, basking in the sunlight and breathing in the fresh air!
・Log Cutting Experience
The saw didn’t go through the wood as easily as I expected, which made me realize once again how skilled professional foresters are.
・Forest Bathing Experience
Taking slow, deep breaths while listening to the sounds of birds and insects was incredibly refreshing. Looking up, I could clearly see the shapes of each tree’s branches and leaves, which was really fascinating.
・Woodworking Experience
We used local Nishikawa timber to make smartphone stands, decorating them freely with a burning pen. It was quite challenging to draw neatly, but that made it more fun!

forest tourism - It was an unforgettable experience. Learning about the benefits of wood and the energy and technique required to cut it, as well as undergoing therapy in the forest and listening to the silence was refreshing. A highly recommended experience!

Therapeutic experience - If you love nature, you’ll enjoy this experience. Shun san is explaining their forest, the trees, history of their family, etc. We get to walk around his forest to enjoy the nature, he’s very well prepared , he provides helmets and gloves for safety. The carving wood work is kind of fun.

Reconnect with nature - We visited on October 24th, and Shun guided us through the forest. He was the perfect guide and explained that the forest belongs to his family, and that before entering, they give thanks to the mountain gods. We experienced woodcutting and then forest bathing, which was extremely invigorating. Listening to the sounds of nature was a wonderful way to take a break from the noise of Tokyo. Afterwards, we went to Shun’s atelier to try some woodcrafting and carved our names and designs on a beautifully crafted Edo Castle–shaped iPhone stand. I highly recommend this experience to anyone looking for something different and a chance to reconnect with nature in Tokyo

The perfect gateway from the city - It was such a wonderful experience to learn from local people about their traditional businesses. It was the perfect gateway from the city.
And nice combination of activities with crafts and sake tasting. I learn a lot about the kinds of wood and the sake production. Everyone was super friendly and I would definitely visit again!

Hands-On Wood Art That Supports a 300-Year Legacy - I had such a great time learning about the different types of Japanese trees and how each one is used for different purposes. The wood art activity with the pyrography pen was super fun and relaxing too! I highly recommend trying this experience — not only do you learn about traditional woodcraft, but your participation also supports a family’s 300-year-old legacy of maintaining acres of forest. I really admire how they care for the community and Mother Earth — nothing from the trees goes to waste, every part is put to good use. 🌿🔥

Supporting Eco-tourism while honoring more than 300 years of sustainable forestry tradition - The eco-tourism experience was truly unforgettable, grounding, and inspiring. The tour begins with a fascinating lecture by the master of a forestry family that has managed the forest for over 300 years. Learning about Nishikawa timber - specifically cedar and cypress - and understanding the vital role forestry played in Japan’s development since the Edo period gave the entire experience a profound historical and cultural context. Hearing how the family preserved not only the forest but its entire ecosystem across generations was both humbling and reassuring in a time when sustainability matters more than ever. The hands-on activities made the experience come alive. Log cutting was surprisingly fun and discovering the distinct scents of three different types of wood was a first-time-experience. Forest bathing was the highlight for me: soulful and immersive, as if you truly become one with nature. The craft activity was a beautiful way to connect creativity, tradition, and nature. Creating a personalized wooden souvenir by burning my favorite kanji character into the wood felt intimate - something I will treasure long after the tour. Most of all, the team was welcoming, knowledgeable, and genuinely passionate about what they do. This tour is a perfect blend of education, experience, and environmental stewardship. I would highly recommend this experience to anyone who loves nature, values history, and believes in preserving long-standing tradition of harmonious co-existence with nature.

Forest Bathing and Edo Castle Crafts - Highly recommended!
We explored a forest lovingly preserved for generations by Inoue Forestry, a company with a 300-year history. It was my first time closely observing and touching living cedar and cypress trees—species I usually associate only with lumber. The forest bathing experience felt especially sacred. There was also a small crafting session, making the tour both enriching and enjoyable.
