Located in the village of Kalnciems, near the river and peat bogs, stands a Soviet-era building constructed in 1980. This building, once considered a slum, had been unused for decades. Private family funds have been invested in its cleaning and restoration. Gradually, the building is being transformed into a peat art museum called Peat House. The Peat House will also feature a peat workshop where art and peat products will be crafted. The preparation of peat is 90% handmade. The Peat Museum aims to document and share the evolution of these traditions.
Artist Edgars Ameriks discovered peat as a material that can be chosen as a new, innovative medium for design and art. With extensive experience and research in peat processing, it can be used with unique techniques to create peat artworks. Each piece is an artifact representing future possibilities.
