The Kotoku-in was established in 1252 and features a bronze statue known as the “Great Buddha Statue,” which stands 13 meters tall. This statue, cast in 1292, depicts a cross-legged figure draped in robes with classical lines reminiscent of ancient Greece. It is situated outdoors against a backdrop of wooded hills.
- Hase-dera Temple - Renowned for its Buddhist statue of Kannon, the Goddess of Mercy, this temple features a statue with eleven faces and a thousand arms. Each face symbolizes a different stage in the pursuit of enlightenment. The gilded wooden statue stands at 9.18 meters tall and is considered one of Japan’s largest wooden sculptures. Visitors can also enjoy the beautiful garden with ponds and the Jizo-do Hall, which houses hundreds of small statues of the Jizo Bodhisattva, who aids the souls of deceased children in reaching paradise.
- Tsurugaoka Hachimangu Shrine - Originally constructed in 1063, this shrine is dedicated to Emperor Ojin (God of War) and Shogun Minamoto no Yoritomo, among others. Notably, this shrine served as both a Shinto “Hachimangu” shrine and a Tendai Buddhist temple for much of its history.
- Kamakura Komachidori - Located between Tsurugaoka Hachimangu Shrine and Kamakura Station, this charming street is lined with numerous restaurants and shops offering traditional Japanese souvenirs. It is a delightful place for dining and shopping.
