Constructed in 1807 by King Sri Wickrama Rajasinghe next to the Temple of the Tooth, the lake has been reduced in size over the years. It is a protected lake where fishing is prohibited.
Royal Botanical Gardens - Located about 5.5 km west of Kandy in Sri Lanka’s Central Province, the Royal Botanic Gardens in Peradeniya attract 2 million visitors annually. Situated near the Mahaweli River, the gardens are famous for their orchid collection.
Kandy View Point - By climbing the hill near Kandy Lake, you can reach Kandy View Point, which offers an unbeatable view of the city. KANDY-NUWARA ELIYA
Ambewela Farms - Ambewela is a small town or hill station in the Nuwara Eliya District of Sri Lanka, sometimes referred to as “Little New Zealand.” Located about 17 km southeast of the district capital Nuwara Eliya, Ambewela also serves as a service center for the New Galway tea planting district.
Sita Temple - The Sita Amman Temple, dedicated to Sita, the wife of Lord Rama, is situated in the hills of Nuwara Eliya and is revered by Hindus as the only temple of its kind in the world. Located five kilometers along the road from Nuwara Eliya to Kandy, it is believed to be the place where King Ravana held Sita captive. The temple is notable for the footprints by the river, thought to resemble those of Hanuman.
Hakgala Botanic Gardens - One of the five botanical gardens in Sri Lanka, Hakgala Botanical Garden is the second largest in the country. The other four are Peradeniya Botanical Garden, Henarathgoda Botanical Garden, Mirijjawila Botanical Garden, and Seetawaka Botanical Garden.
Gregory Lake - Created in 1873 by British-era Governor Sir William Gregory, Gregory Lake was initially intended to provide electricity but was mainly used for leisure and recreation. At its peak, it was the most prominent attraction in the area, serving as a relaxation spot for many visitors.
Shri Bhakta Hanuman Temple - Built by the Chinmaya Mission of Sri Lanka, the Shri Bhakta Hanuman Temple is located in Ramboda on the Kandy-Nuwara Eliya Road, about 30 kilometers north of Nuwara Eliya. The Chinmaya Mission is a Hindu spiritual organization dedicated to spreading Vedanta, the science of the self as explained in the Vedas, Upanishads, and other important Hindu scriptures, including the Bhagavad Gita.
Nuwara Eliya - Nuwara Eliya is a city in the tea country hills of central Sri Lanka. The Hakgala Botanical Gardens, known for its roses and tree ferns, also shelters monkeys and blue magpies. Nearby, the colorful Seetha Amman Temple is adorned with religious figures.
KANDY-DAMBULLA-SIGIRIYA
Dambulla Cave Temple - Also known as the Golden Temple of Dambulla, this World Heritage Site is located in central Sri Lanka. It is the largest and best-preserved cave temple complex in the country, situated 148 kilometers east of Colombo and 72 kilometers north of Kandy.
Sigiriya The Ancient Rock Fortress - Sigiriya is a stunning example of ancient Sri Lankan art, architecture, and landscaping. Built over 1,600 years ago, the 600 ft high black rock once appeared as a massive white cloud above the surrounding forests. Its sides were adorned with frescoes of semi-naked nymphs, and a lion-shaped gatehouse guarded the entrance to the Sky Palace atop the rock. Though the climb is strenuous, it is well worth the effort. A must-visit site!
Dambulla Dedicated Economic Centre - Established in 1999 in the Dambulla Secretariat Division of Matale District, this wholesale market for vegetables and fruits allows for more direct farmer participation in selling produce.
Rangiri Dambulla International Stadium - This 30,000-seat cricket stadium in Sri Lanka is located in the Central Province near Dambulla. Built on a 60-acre site leased from the Rangiri Dambulla Temple, it is the first and only international cricket ground in Sri Lanka’s dry zone. The stadium overlooks the Dambulla Tank (reservoir) and the Dambulla Rock.
Sigiriya - Often referred to by locals as the Eighth Wonder of the World, this ancient palace and fortress complex is of significant archaeological importance and attracts thousands of tourists annually. It is likely the most visited tourist destination in Sri Lanka.
Dambulla - Famous for its rock cave temple, Dambulla is an iconic Sri Lankan site. Despite its somewhat commercial atmosphere, it remains a significant holy place and should not be missed.
SIGIRIYA-ANURADHAPURA-COLOMBO
Mihintale - Mihintale is a mountain peak near Anuradhapura in Sri Lanka, believed to be the site where Buddhist monk Mahinda met King Devanampiyatissa, marking the introduction of Buddhism to Sri Lanka.
Jaya Sri Maha Bodhi - This city is home to a sapling of the Bo tree under which the Buddha attained enlightenment.
Ruwanwelisaya - As the oldest stupa in Sri Lanka, Ruwanwelisaya is an architectural marvel from ancient Sri Lanka. Located in Anuradhapura, it is a top sacred site for Buddhists and is situated a short walk from the Maha Bodhi tree. The stupa is one of the eight venerated places in Anuradhapura, believed to have been visited by Buddha during his three visits to Sri Lanka.
Ritigala Forest Monastery - Standing at 766 meters above sea level, Ritigala Mountain is the highest peak in Sri Lanka’s north-central dry plains. The mountain, about three miles long and two miles wide at its broadest point, is covered in dense jungle inhabited by wild elephants, leopards, and bears. It serves as the watershed for the Malwatu Oya and Kalueba Ela rivers. Ritigala Mountain has been declared a Strict Natural Reserve to preserve its pristine environment.
Anuradhapura - Once a political and religious capital of Ceylon for over a millennium, Anuradhapura was abandoned after an invasion in 993. Hidden in dense jungle for many years, the site, with its palaces, monasteries, and monuments, is now accessible once again.
