Kandy
Temple of the Sacred Tooth Relic - The Temple of the Sacred Tooth, with its golden roof, is home to Sri Lanka’s most significant Buddhist relic – a tooth of the Buddha. During puja (offerings or prayers), the room where the tooth is kept is open to both devotees and tourists, although the tooth itself is not visible. It is stored in a gold casket shaped like a dagoba (stupa), which contains a series of six progressively smaller dagoba caskets.
In addition to the main temple, the complex features a variety of smaller temples, shrines, and museums.
Kandy to Sigiriya
Sigiriya The Ancient Rock Fortress - Known as the Lion’s Rock, Sigiriya is a rock fortress and palace located in Sri Lanka’s Matale district. Surrounded by gardens, ponds, and other structures, Sigiriya was constructed by King Kassapa and is recognized as a World Heritage site. It is the best-preserved city center in Asia.
Dambulla Cave Temple - The stunning Royal Rock Temple complex is situated about 160m above the road in southern Dambulla. It comprises five separate caves containing approximately 150 breathtaking Buddha statues and paintings, representing some of Sri Lanka’s most significant and evocative religious art. Buddha images were first created here over 2000 years ago, with subsequent kings adding to and enhancing the cave art over the centuries.
Pidurangala Rock - While Sigiriya Rock is steeped in history and features dramatic elements like the lion’s paw and the mirror wall, Pidurangala Rock offers a more natural ambiance, despite also housing a temple.
Pidurangala Rock is adjacent to Sigiriya Rock and provides the best vantage point for viewing Sigiriya Rock, being only slightly lower. It is a popular spot for sunrise, offering 360-degree views of the valleys and Sigiriya Rock.
There is no need to choose between the two. Many travelers enjoy the sunrise at Pidurangala and then head to Sigiriya Rock for the sunset.
