• Royal Botanical Gardens - The Royal Botanic Gardens in Peradeniya were founded in 1821, six years after the English took over the Kandyan Kingdom. The site is less than 5.5 km from Kandy on the Colombo Road and occupies a loop of the Mahaweli River, which surrounds it on all sides except the south, where it is bordered by the main road. The area, covering 61.25 hectares, is about 1550 feet above sea level. More than 4000 species of plants, including woody trees, palms, ferns, orchids, and shrubs, are currently present within the gardens.
