• Royal Botanical Gardens - The Royal Botanic Gardens in Peradeniya were founded in 1821, six years after the English took over the Kandyan Kingdom. Situated less than 5.5 km from Kandy on the Colombo Road, the gardens are encircled by the Mahaweli River on all sides except the south, which is bordered by the main road. Covering an area of 61.25 hectares, it is about 1550 feet above sea level. The gardens boast over 4000 plant species, including trees, palms, ferns, orchids, and shrubs.
