• Knuckles - The Knuckles Mountain Range is located in central Sri Lanka, within the Matale and Kandy Districts. The range is named after a series of recumbent folds and peaks in the western part of the massif, which resemble the knuckles of a clenched fist when viewed from certain points in the Kandy District. Although this name was given by early British surveyors, the Sinhalese locals have traditionally called the area Dumbara Kanduvetiya, meaning mist-laden mountain range. The Knuckles Mountain Forest Range, covering about 21,000 hectares, is part of the Central Highlands World Heritage site, designated in 2010. While it is part of the Central Highlands, it is distinctly separated by the Mahaweli river valley to the south and east, and the Matale valley to the west. The Knuckles Mountain Forest Range features a variety of vegetation types, resulting from its diverse climatic and topographic conditions.
