• Sri Muthumariamman Temple - This renowned Hindu temple in Matale is known as Sri Muthumariamman Temple. Devotees believe Muthumariamman is the goddess of rain. In Tamil, “Muthu” means pearls, “Mari” means rain, and “Amman” means goddess. Hindus worship this goddess for prosperity. Hinduism was introduced to Sri Lanka from India, and many temples were established on lands owned by English planters. These planters brought Tamils from India to work on their estates. The Matale Hindu Temple was constructed in 1874 on land that was previously a paddy field, donated for the temple’s construction in 1852. Unfortunately, the temple suffered significant damage during an ethnic conflict in 1983.
